APES: The overall theme of the APES course can be seen as balance vs. imbalance: a balanced system survives while an imbalanced system collapses. The various environmental crises humans face are the result of ignoring and upsetting critical ecological balances. This course is broadly interdisciplinary and students will be incorporating ecology, geology, chemistry, physics, politcal science, economics, and ethics. Everything is interconnected!

AEE: The objective of the AEE course is to instill an understanding of current energy systems and the potential energy alternatives. This class has extensive hands on study and experimentation. The environmental impact of our current fossil fuel dependence demands our exploration of alternate energy sources. There are many alternatives that are currently in use or being developed such as solar PV, solar thermal, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, fuel cells, biofuels, and biomass. Each of these holds great promise but each also has its own limitations and challenges. The ultimate objective is to identify and utilize an energy solution that is both renewable and sustainable. Core curriculum topics will also be incorporated to advance student understanding and appreciation of technology.
