About the Downtown School PTA

The DTS PTA has been supporting our students since the school's founding in 1991.  We've grown a lot since those early days and are now an active, integral partner in the education of the children at DTS.

Our Mission

The mission of the DTS PTA is to achieve educational excellence by encouraging parental involvement, building strong teacher-parent relationships, enabling academic enrichment programs, and providing academic, fun, and family-oriented activities which promote learning and strengthen our community.

Our Objectives

Coordinate Parent Volunteers

DTS parents volunteer in the school in many capacities during our 1 hour a week volunteer time. But what if that is all we gave to the school...did you know that parent volunteers are responsible for the success of many integral programs at the Downtown School. Programs such as the book fair (both fall and spring), Teacher Appreciation Week, the Yearbook (design, publication and distribution) are all successfully run programs sponsored by the PTA with parent volunteers (volunteering outside their 1 hour per week requirement).
DTS parents also volunteer outside of the school and after hours. Examples include: organizing the Back to School Picnic, family nights at Chick Fil-A and Skate Haven, planning and implementing new playground equipment, fund raising for various school programs and classroom needs not covered by the school-system budget.

Finance School Programs

Our operating budget is $25,000 to 30,000 per year. Major projects funded in past year included design, purchase and installation of new playground equipment for both the primary play park and the pre-school play park to be finished in the fall of 2009, reimbursement of teachers for classroom items, art room supplies, teacher appreciation events, and family nights.

Foster a Sense of Community

The PTA sponsors Family Nights throughout the year which are held at the school and off campus. From the New Family Ice Cream Social, and the Back to School picnic at the beginning of the year to Chick-Fil-A Nights and Skate nights held throughout the school year, there are many ways for DTS families to feel apart of our DTS community.
