Salvete Discipulae et Discipuli! I am very excited to be working with the Latin students at Hanes this year. The study of Latin will provide many benefits for students in years to come. With knowledge of Latin, students are generally more successful in taking tests such as the SAT and GRE, they are better prepared to begin college, and they gain a much stronger understanding of the English Language!
Study skills/strategies and cooperative student work are large components of our Latin class. Educational research shows that working collaboratively with other students is very beneficial to student learning. Both study skills and cooperative work increase the ability of ALL students to learn and teach skills that are valuable to all of us throughout our lives! Latin students at Hanes are working collaboratively to grow in their confidence to read and understand Latin text.
In Latin class, students are expected to pay attention, participate in group activities, and keep an on-going Review Notebook of each chapter. Please see my webpage about the notebook, as it includes sample pages and clear directions for creating the notebook pages! These notebooks are an essential part of our class and will be graded on an on-going basis. Parents, please be actively involved in encouraging your children to put in the required 10 minutes per day to work on notebooks and vocabulary study! My experience shows that students with good notebooks do much better on both vocabulary and grammar assessments! Also, please check your student's notebooks occasionally to see that they are making progress (7th grade students are starting this school year with chapter 11, while 8th grade students will start at chapter 20, after spending a portion of 1st quarter reviewing each lesson. Note for 8th graders - we are planning to be at chapter 25 by the end of the 2nd quarter, chapter 30 by the end of 3rd quarter and chapter 36 by the end of the year.) The 8th graders should be in a good position this year to be prepared for their end of year testing!
Feel free to contact me at any time to check on your student's progress or to ask any questions. I will reply to your email. You can also check the LATIN BLOG on my page for updates. The best way to reach me is via email at: ckmorgan@wsfcs.k12.nc.us or call the school to leave a message for me if email is not available. Do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, as I am very happy to help you understand what is going on in class and to help you help your child be as successful as possible! Please visit my other pages to learn more about me and what we are doing in Latin class!
Did you know you can access your child's grades via parent assistant? It is a great way to keep up your student's progress at school. There is a link on the front page of the Hanes website and you will need to go to the guidance office to sign up.
