The mission of Ashley IB Elementary Magnet School is to develop a global community that creates understanding and celebrates knowledge. The clean, safe, diverse, child-centered environment invites students to learn and motivates them to inquire and discover. Ashley IB Elementary is the only school in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IB-PYP).
Ashley IB Elementary has been an authorized IB World School since February 2006. The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme offers a rigorous academic program that is focused on inquiry-based learning. The IB-PYP teaching philosophy focuses on the total growth of maturing and developing children. At Ashley IB Magnet Elementary, teachers integrate the educational research, practice, knowledge, and experience of international schools with the Common Core State Standards and the North Carolina Essential Standards.The result is a relevant, engaging, accelerated, and creative educational program.
A significant and distinctive feature of the IB Primary Years Programme is the organization of curriculum into six transdisciplinary themes. These six themes of global significance create a transdisciplinary framework that allows students to “step up” beyond the confines of learning within subject areas. Through Units of Inquiry organized around these transdisciplinary themes, students develop their abilities to ask questions and become involved in the concerns of the global community. By attracting a diverse population of faculty and students to the magnet program, Ashley IB Magnet Elementary provides a rich environment that enables students to learn through the IB philosophies and to attain the goals of the International Baccalaureate Program, which include an authentic global awareness, and an understanding of various cultures, ethnicities, and talents found in the worlds’ communities.
