SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT TEAM
BY-LAWS
I. PurposeThe purpose of the WMS School Improvement Team is to facilitate the school improvement and school renewal process by:
- Acting as an advisory board and clearinghouse
- Serving as a primary planning group
- Developing curriculum goals and instructional procedures
- Consulting with administration in matters affecting personnel
- Developing and recommending budgets
- Managing the School Improvement Plan
II. Membership and SelectionThe Walkertown Middle School SIT will typically consist of 12 staff members, immediate past chairperson and at least 2 non-staff members. The types of membership, which are determined by the method of selection, are defined below:
A. Standing Members: The individuals serving in these positions are permanent members.Principal
Curriculum Coordinator
Media Coordinator
Technology Coordinator
Guidance Counselor
Immediate Past Chairperson
B. Area Representation: These members will be elected to two-year terms ending on alternative years by areas of representation. The WMS Staff will vote to approve or disapprove the area representatives. The areas of representation are:Grade 6: 1 representative
Grade 7: 1 representative
Grade 8: 1 representative
Electives: 2 representatives
Exceptional Children: 1 representative
Classified Staff: 1 representative
C. School Community Representatives
Parents: 2-3 members, proportionately representing the racial demographics
of the school population.
Students: 2 members of the WMS Student Government,
preferably president and vice-presidentD. Officers- Chairperson: Immediate past co-chair, as elected by the SIT members.
- Co-Chairperson: Elected by incoming SIT members, designated to serve as chair the following year.
- Chairperson may serve 2 (one-year) terms before relinquishing position. Continuation of term should be determined by SIT members at the end of the chair’s first year term.
- Recorder: Elected by SIT membership annually.
III. Committees will be formed annually as needed.
IV. Meetings
Regular meetings are scheduled as needed throughout the year. Normal meeting time will be 2:15.
An agenda will be shared prior to each meeting. Proposed agenda items should be submitted in writing to the chairperson in advance. The meeting agenda will include an open sharing time for visitors. Anyone may attend SIT meetings.
The minutes of the meetings will be shared and posted on the school’s website.
V. Decision MakingDecisions will be made by consensus.
VI. Amendments to the by-laws should be prepared in writing and approved by a minimum 2/3 of the School Improvement Team.
