Scholarship Updates for 2012-2013

Scholarship Process:

1.            All seniors interested in scholarship opportunities should complete their Senior Brag Sheet and return it to Mrs. Sergiacomi by September 14.

2.          This form will be used when the Parkland Scholarship Committee must nominate students for particular scholarships.  Examples of those scholarships include the Morehead-Cain to UNC-Chapel Hill, the Park Scholarship to NC State, the Jefferson Scholarship to UVA and many others.  In addition to this form, the scholarship committee may choose to interview select students before making final nominations.

3.          This form can also be copied and given to teachers writing you letters of recommendation.  You can give teachers a copy or they can request a copy directly from Mrs. Sergiacomi.

4.          You will still need to apply for most scholarships directly. Scholarship information can be found on the bulletin board outside of Guidance, on the Guidance website, and will be sent through emails on a regular basis.  If you would like to subscribe to the Scholarship listserve, email Mrs. Sergiacomi at cmsergiacomi@wsfcs.k12.nc.us.  You can also follow us on Twitter @PMHSCollegeInfo.

Frequently Asked Questions about Scholarships

Where can I find scholarship information?

The internet is your best source for scholarship information.  Visit the website of each college you’re applying to in order to determine what scholarships/financial aid they offer.  Check to see if they require a separate scholarship application or if they use their admissions application to select scholarship recipients.  Other great scholarship search websites include:  www.fastweb.com, www.cfnc.org, www.wsfoundation.org, www.UNCF.org, www.hispanicfund.org, and www.collegeboard.org. Also check with your parents’ place of employment, church, or other community groups to see what scholarships they may offer. Scholarship newsletters will be available in the Guidance office, on the bulletin board outside of Guidance, and will periodically be sent to seniors and parents through email.  If you would like to subscribe to these scholarship emails please email Mrs. Sergiacomi at cmsergiacomi@wsfcs.k12.nc.us.

Does the Scholarship Newsletter contain every scholarship available to me?

No!  The Scholarship Newsletter contains valuable information about scholarships, but it by no means is an exhaustive list of every opportunity.  The Newsletter primarily contains scholarships that are sent to counselors through mail or email as well as scholarships that students have previously won from our school.  You will need to do your own research in addition to the Scholarship Newsletter.

What do I do if a scholarship requires a school nomination?

Some scholarships only allow a small number of applicants from each high school.  In those cases, the Scholarship Committee at Parkland will nominate the appropriate number of seniors.  Nominations will be based on your Senior Brag Sheet, so make sure to turn that in to Mrs. Sergiacomi ASAP to be fully considered for those nominations.

How do I apply for scholarships?

Depending on the scholarship, you can either fill out a paper application or apply online. Many paper applications are downloadable from the sponsoring organization’s web site, but some applications will be available as hard copies in the Guidance Office.

Winston-Salem Foundation Scholarships and Grants

The Winston-Salem Foundation is an excellent source of scholarship and grant funding.  You can apply to MANY scholarships through one Common Application found on the Winston-Salem Foundation website at www.wsfoundation.org.  This is a simple way to apply for a LOT of funding!  Every college-bound senior should plan to complete this Common Application on the WS Foundation website.  All of these scholarships have deadlines of either April 1st  (scholarships) or August 15th (need-based grants).
