The voting is over for the North Carolina Children's Book Award and we've gotten a winner, but this year Jefferson Elementary's winner is different with the overall winner.  At Jefferson Elementary, most of the students thought that 11 Experiments that Failed should win the award, but our votes mixed with the rest of the students in North Carolina chose a different winner.

And the winner of the North Carolina Children's Book Award is ...
Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes!!
A shocking turn of events, but exciting nonetheless!!

The library has been working hard to help the teachers with the new CCES - we've ordered several books that should help in their lessons.  We've been working with the teachers to try to get them all the resources they need to teach more effectively.

Book Fair has come and gone - thanks so much for all the parents who came to help and also those parents who sent money with your kids.  This is the library's main source of income and it is such a tremendous help to us!!  Thanks!

Music

Wow!  It certainly is hard to believe we are nearing the end of our school year together!   K - 2 students will be spending time with a favorite character, "Freddie the frog" over the next few weeks!  We will become acquainted with the lines and spaces of both the treble and bass clefs as we hear about the many adventures Freddie and his good friend, Eli the elephant share!  For related games and coloring pages, you and your child are invited to go to WWW.FREDDIETHEFROG.COM!

3rd and 4th graders will review musical concepts we learned this year as we play a variety of Music games such as "Italian Day," "Music Symbols" and "Recorder" Bingo, as well as Recorder Detective and a fun Ear Training activity! (ask your student how it makes them "smarter"!)

5th graders are finishing up Recorder Karate - many are well on their way earning the maximum number of Recorder Karate  belts!  Woo hoo!  We are also working dilligently on learning 2 very special pieces of music they will sing at their Graduation program on Fri., June 7th at 11:30!

I am very proud of everything JES music students have accomplished this year!  Thank you for your support and enthusiasm for Music!  I hope everyone has a fun, restful and musical summer!!

P.E.

Well the 4th quarter is flying by and we are staying busy, learning, and exercising in P.E.  During this quarter we have worked on throwing and catching skills.  K-2nd focus on using hands and 3rd-5th incorporating Lacrosse sticks.  We will also be completing our Fitness Testing.  Grades K-2nd learn and practice the test.  While 3rd-5th perform and record the tests.  The tests are focused on 4 compnents of fitness: Aerobic Capacity, Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, and Flexibility.  The kids are encouraged to try their best and look to maintain or improve fitness levels.

Our Field days are coming up on June 3rd for 3rd-5th grades and June 4th for K-2nd grades.  We would love to have as much help as possible on those days.  Parent volunteers really make the field days go and thatmake it a enjoyable time for the kids and th parents.  Please contact me if you can volunteer for these funfilled events.

Jump Rope For Heart was a HUGE success.  Jefferson Elementary raised over $10,600.  That is amazing and it will help so many lives around us.  I appreciate everyone's participation and desire to help make a differnence.

I hope everyone has a great 4th quarter and a great healthy and active summer.
Stay active and fit.

Fifth Grade         Our fifth graders are beginning to learn about Databases and Excel.  They will complete two excel activities; One about land and population and go on a "shopping spree" to spend exactly 1,000 imaginary dollars.  If time we will produce one small PowerPoint.
Fourth Grade          Fourth graders are working Databases and Excel also.  They will complete two Excel activities; a Weather Tracking worksheet and a "shopping spree" also.  If time allows, we will produce one small PowerPoint.

Third Grade               In Third grade we are beginning to learn about graphs and will do several activities directed to that topic.  We will also do a spreadsheet activity when introducing them to Excel.

Second Grade            Second graders have just finished playing their first Jeopardy game and did very well.  We will do another before the end of the year.  We will also do several Keyboarding activities in the coming weeks.

First Graders               In first grade, we are working hard on Keyboarding which we will do for half of each class time for the rest of the year.  Games will include: Dance Mat Typing, Keyboard Challenge and Keyboard Climber.

Kindergartners                Kindergartners are still mastering logging on and logging off their computers. They have begun learning the key placement on the keyboard using a game called Keyboard Zoo.  They are doing well and I will begin using different games as the year ends.
