Welcome to Mount Tabor High School,
As we look forward to the 2012-13 school year, I would like to reflect on the highlights from an amazing 2011-2012 campaign. We were once again fortunate to be ranked in the Top 1% of high schools across the country by both Newsweek Magazine and the Washinton Post. Mount Tabor High School continues as an “Expected Growth School” as determined by the Noth Carolina Department of Public Instruction ABC’s Program. Our students and staff worked hard this year to meet these recognitions in our school life and I am so proud to see their efforts rewarded. We have learned this summer that we were 100%, 24 of 24 targets on our Reading and Math progress towards Annual Measurable Objectives (AMO) Goals as determined by the Federal No Child Left Behind legislation. Our 4-Year Cohort Graduation Rate for the Class of 2012 was 92.8%, up from 86%. The graduating Class of 2012 was awarded 12.7 million dollars in scholarships which continues to amaze me as one of the high marks for WSFCS. The academic programs and offerings at Mount Tabor High School continue to be a source of pride for our school community. The Class of 2012 graduated 409 students and garnered the following successes:
-Graduates attending all 16 on North Carolina's public universities
-Graduates attending over 16 private North Carolina Colleges
-3 Graduates attending Art and Fashion Institutes
-11 Enlistments in our military
-52 Graduates accepted to UNC-Chapel Hill, 46 to NC State, 23 to Wake Forest University and others including Cornell, Davidson, Howard, Penn and Vanderbilt
-82 Graduates earning the Preseident's Award for Educational Excellence by earning a 3.5 or higher unweighted GPA
-41 Honor Graduates with a 4.76 QPA or higher
-28 Seniors who have made Athletic commitments
-147 Seniors (over a third of the class) receiving an academic scholarship
-1200 AP courses taken by the Class of 2012 (100 more than the Class of 2011)
-94% Going to a two or four year College and/or University
While our academic program is our back bone, we also celebrate the opportunities offered our students beyond the classroom. Our Performing Arts Programs are always well represented in district, regional and state competitions. The Bands of Mount Tabor (whether it be marching, concert or symphonic) set the standard for performances both during games and in competitions. Our Theatre Arts program continues to compete at the highest levels, playing host to the regional North Carolina Theatre Conference (NCTC) each year as well as our fall “One Act” plays and spring 2012 musical "Into the Woods." Our Choral program (including women’s ensemble, concert choir, acapella and the Spartanettes) show off the collaborative talents of so many of our Arts students. The Visual Arts program is second to none and offers membership into the National Art Honor Society.
Our Athletic program continues to be a standard for schools in our area. We always get everyone’s best shot in competition and sportsmanship. The Well Fargo Cup (awarded to the top finishing school in our conference) has enjoyed a home in Sparta for twenty of the past twenty-one years. Our teams earn conference championships regularly and represent us well in the playoffs. During 2010-2011, our men’s basketball team made a Final Four appearance as the 2011-12 team won a conference championship and made the Sweet 16. Our women's basketball program has won 6 conference championships in a row, our men’s cross country team earned a 4th place finish in 2010 and a runner up finish at the state meet in 2011. The women’s cross country teams finished 7th in 2010 and 11th in 2011. This past fall our football, soccer, volleyball, field hockey and tennis teams made deep runs into the playoffs as sportsmanship and spartan pride led the way! The spring was a year to remember for our baseball team as they made a Final 8 run for the ages. All of this takes place because Mount Tabor is fortunate to be home to some of the best coaches and student/athletes in Winston-Salem, State of North Carolina, and Southeast.
The parent support is alive and kicking as well at Mount Tabor. We are blessed to operate our PTSA with the work of an academic, performing arts and athletics board. Each board has simply been fantastic to work with this year in their support of the Spartans! The academic board focused it's energy on our teacher wish list and the partnering of more than $75,000 of technology improvements to the media center and various classrooms. The performing arts programs are seeing the infusion of over $30,000 worth of musical instruments and the athletic board is adding another $32,000 worth of athletic improvements to our locker rooms and coaches offices. We also have an executive board that oversees the three that has worked in 2011-12 to complete our new gym entrance..."take a look!". "You Just Can't Hide That Spartan Pride!!" We are very fortunate and feel the partnership with our parents is clearly something that sets us apart.
With that said, we continue to face many challenges each year and 2012-13 will be no exception. The economy continues to take its toll on public education. Your continued support of our Spartans is needed and appreciated! Our staff is committed to facing these challenges with the same positive attitude and problem-solving spirit we have demonstrated in the past.
I encourage you to join us as we focus on “Excellence in Every Endeavor” during the 2012-2013 school year and beyond.
Go Spartans!
