Facilities/Construction DepartmentWinston Salem /Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS) is located in the central Piedmont region of North Carolina. The school district operates 44 elementary schools, K-5; 15 middle schools, grades 6-8; and, 17 high schools, grades 9-12; 8 Non-Traditional Schools, in over 220 structures with a vintage that ranges from 1926 to 2018. The district serves more than 54 thousand students and is growing at a rate of one percent per year.
Since 1996, the facilities and construction department has completed more than $650 million in new construction, renovations, replacements, technology, and capital improvement projects which bring the total district square footage to 8 million sq. ft.
Construction and facilities department oversees the district's school construction and renovations. We work from building concept to completion, furniture up-fit and move in providing a total working school. We work closely with engineers, architects, suppliers, principals, district departments, and other staff members in bringing projects to completion. Other duties include working with staff and city, county, state, and national agencies to coordinate work efforts, secure funding for new construction and other school projects.
The department has the responsibility to recommend and select land, architects, consultants, and contractors, and to establish with our Board of Education district programs and standards of products and programs. Representatives of our department meet with the Board of Education and public to determine district needs and identify funding sources as well as prepare bond packages for authorization by our local County Commissioners.
