• About Me

Greetings Parents/Guardians/Students: My name is Mr. James (Jim) Allen, and I am happy to be serving as your Earth Science instructor this year.

I was born and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina. I attended Grimsley High School in Greensboro, and joined the Coast Guard after graduation. I served onboard the Coast Guard Cutter Sweetgum as a Seaman, was a crewmember of the Search and Rescue small boat station at Ocracoke Island and became an Aviation Electronics Technician at Air Station Elizabeth City. After my discharge, I attended Appalachian State University (ASU) and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology.

After graduating from ASU, I went to work for Bain, Palmer and Associates (BPA), an Environmental Engineering company in Greensboro, NC. My experiences included Environmental Site Assessments, Underground Storage Tank removal and remediation, Monitoring Well installation and Sampling, Geophysical Surveys and Water Supply Surveys.

I returned to ASU and received my Teaching Certification for Secondary Earth and Space Science and began teaching at West Wilkes High School in 1997 and taught there for fourteen years. I began teaching at Atkins in 2013, and I am truly thankful to be working here serving the students of Atkins.

I am married to Dana Luper Allen and we have five boys ranging in age from twenty to twenty seven. Dana and I like to travel and hike throughout the west attempting to climb the highest peaks of each state and hike the trails of the National Parks.
