• What is a Magnet School?
    Each magnet school offers a unique and challenging curriculum as well as the supports that students need to expand their interests, talents and passions. Students have the opportunity to continue in a magnet program from kindergarten through grade 12.

    How are magnet schools different?
    Magnet students are built around five pillars:  Diversity & Equity, Innovative Curriculum and Professional Development, Academic Excellence, Support Systems, and Family & Community Partnerships.  Magnet schools promote diversity in thought and action within Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, providing unique opportunities to develop a student's curiosity and talent through special classes and clubs, increased access to technology, and research-backed teaching methods.
    Magnet programs in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County include:
    • Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)
    • Global & Cultural studies
    • International Baccalaureate (IB)
    • Visual and performing arts
    • Multiple intelligences
    • College & Career Readiness
    • and coming 2018 STEAM -- Science, Technology, Environmental Studies, Arts & Innovation, & Medicine 
    Parents or students must apply to attend a magnet school, and applications are accepted only during the Magnet School Enrollment Period.
    How are magnet schools like other public schools?
    Magnet schools are public schools and must follow the North Carolina Essential Standards and national curriculum standards. Like other public school students, magnet students are required to take state-mandated tests. However, many magnet schools also measure their students’ progress through portfolios of their work, performances, presentations and assessments on an international scale (for IB schools).
    Magnet School Requirements

    Once assigned to a magnet school, students may complete all grades as long as they attend school regularly, exhibit exemplary conduct, and fulfill magnet expectations. If students do not meet these standards, they may be reassigned to their residential schools at the end of the school year.
