The Downtown School is a unique community of learners, offering authentic, hands-on learning in the heart of Winston-Salem’s Downtown Arts District. DTS draws upon Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences theories and Joseph Renzulli’s Schoolwide Enrichment Model to provide meaningful, individualized educational opportunities with the whole child in mind.

This is our 29th year as a “Next Century School,” utilizing community partnerships and innovative teaching practices to develop lifelong learners prepared for Next Century challenges.

Our famed “Family Feel” is achieved through small class sizes (capped at 15 students); “looping,” in which students stay with the same teacher for two years; parent involvement through volunteering;and our focus on Responsive Classroom’s Social-Emotional Learning strategies. Our open classrooms afford multiple opportunities for multi-age learning and student choice throughout the day.

Our school location allows for many opportunities authentic, real-world learning through walkable field trips to nearby businesses, galleries, and parks, including student apprenticeships with local professionals in a wide range of fields.Community partnerships bring in local experts to boost our studies of science, the arts, and more. Our school grounds offer gardens and a greenhouse, both maintained by students, an outdoor classroom space, and “loose parts” recess options for all grades, providing engaging, joyful opportunities for creative thinking and critical reasoning throughout the school day.
