    Greetings Cardinal Nation,
This is Dr. Burnette calling with this week's announcements on Cinco de Mayo.

We need all 2nd-5th grade students and families to come out to Konnoak Thursday evening at 5:30pm. We need you to learn what to expect on the End-of-Grade testing and what you can do to help your child prepare for success. We also need you to come to the information session on Single Gender Classes and reserve your 1st grader through 5th grader's spot in the all girls, all boys or co-ed classes for 2019-2020. There are limited spaces.

    Mark your calendars for:
May 17's Multicultural Extravaganza and return your form from last week to let us know about your participation.
May 20 will be K-2 Field Day and May 22 will be 3rd-5th grade Field Day. We need approved parent volunteers to join us in giving out water and ask that parents donate bottles of water for their class on the Field Days.
May is end-of-year assessment time for K-3 DIBELS and TRC, K-2 Math State Assessment, K-5 i-Ready Reading and Math and 3rd-5th grade End-of-Grade testing from May 29-June 11, so attendance, effort and hard work are more important than ever to show your student's growth and/or proficiency.

May 6-10 is National Teacher's Apperciation Week. We sent home fliers on Friday with some suggested ways that you could recognize teachers, assistants, support staff, administrative team members, and all Konnoak Staff members for what they do all day, everyday.

*Monday--Help give your teacher 50 reasons why they are fabulous with a note, a card or compliments.
*Tuesday—Bring your teacher a flower to start the day for Groovy 70’s Flower Power
*Wednesday—Rad 80’s —Bring your teacher some of their favorite items to show them they are cool.
*Thursday—Saved by the Bell 90’s —Bring in school supplies and items for your teacher to save the day..and
*Friday— Futuristic Friday —Show or tell your teacher how he/she has made a difference in your life/future.

No matter what you do...don't miss this chance to make this week special for all educators, especially those who grace the walls and halls of Konnoak Elementary School with their commitment, talents and love of our students.

Lastly, please remind students that fighting, aggressive behavior and disrespect will not be tolerated and unsafe behavior will result in students being suspended from school. We don't have time to waste, we need to be focused, intentional and supportive as a school community to get the results we know our students can achieve. We can exceed our goals with your help. Thanks for all that you do!

    Greetings Cardinal Nation,
This is Dr. Burnette calling with this week's announcements.
Congratulations to all K-2 students who participated in the Spelling Bee on Friday. The Kindergarten winner was Aracely Lopez-Hernandez, 1st grade was Jetli Bernal-Silva and the 2nd grade and overall K-2 Spelling Bee winner was Joshue Guevara-Cortez. Thanks to Mrs. D and the committee for hosting a great spelling bee opportunity for our young all-stars.

    This week's reminders are:
*Motivational Monday is wear Flower Day to help us Spring into action and watch our students and staff blossom in this 4th quarter.
*Monday we also have our Basketball Championship Game at 3:30pm, so please come out and support our players, cheerleaders and coaches. Admission is $2.00 and some concessions will be available for purchase.
*We will have tutoring on Tuesday and Thursday and need all enrolled students to remain if they are at school that day to help them grow.
*Wednesday, May 1 is a Teacher Workday and there is no school. This day is focused on supporting Education and Educators in North Carolina for the good of all educators, students, families and communities. We ask that you support our educators and continue to help us show all K-12 educators that they are valued and valuable.
*Friday the 2nd-5th grade D-Unity team members will have their last practice afterschool.
*May 6-10 is National Teacher Appreciation Week to celebrate every member of our staff, as well as it is College/Career Readiness Week. We will have Career Fair Day on Wednesday, May 8 and we invite parents to come and share experiences and careers. If you are interested in presenting, please contact Ms. Green or an administrator in the main office. We will also send home a flier with suggestions about ways to celebrate our staff members for Teacher Appreciation Week.
*May 9 we will have the EOG night for 2nd-5th grade families, a D-Unity Showcase and an information session about Single Gender Classes. When we offered Single Gender Classes, we saw higher student achievement, less discipline referrals and more class family bonds throughout the school. So, we have decided to offer those opportunities again. However, this depends on how many families enroll for each class. Parents will be able to sign-up for your child to be in an all boys, all girls or co-ed boys and girls class catered to the brain-based learning styles of the group of students in the room for 2019-2020. We typically offer this 1st grade through 5th grade, but this will depend on the interest from the families. Teachers are specially chosen to teach each of the classes and involved in professional development to support all boys or all girls classes. Come out May 9 and find out more before you make your decision.

Lastly, please mark your calendar to bring your family and join us for our Annual Multicultural Extravaganza on Friday, May 17 at 5:30pm. We invite parents to bring meal items that represent your heritage/culture and the school will provide various rices and pastas from around the world to add to your contributions. Fliers will be sent home with more information and chances to sign-up to bring food and/or to join a grade level to present about your heritage.
Thank you for all that you do!

On Tuesday, PreKindergarten, Kindergarten and 5th Grade students will take their cap and gown pictures for their end of year celebrations. Orders should be brought in on Tuesday or purchased online with LifeTouch.

Basketball Playoffs will begin on Wednesday, April 24 at 3:30pm. Admission is $2.00 for anyone school aged and older and we hope you will support our cheerleaders and basketball players.

The School Improvement Team meeting for April will be held Thursday, April 25 at 7am in the Media Center. Parent representatives are welcome to attend as we discuss our data analysis and areas of focus as we plan for next year.

    Greetings Cardinal Nation,
This is Dr. Burnette with this week's announcements.

We need all parents to support their students' academic progress, habits as learners and goal setting by attending the following events:
Monday, April 1, we will have Student-Led Conference and Literacy Night information. Please come from 5:30-6:30pm to find out your child's progress for this quarter and how you can help them, especially in literacy. Teachers will provide you student reports from MClass and I-Ready to help you know what your student needs to work on next to excel and grow.

We also invite you to visit the Spring Book Fair, which officially opens Monday. You can stop in from 3:30-6:30pm on Monday and help your child build his/her spring and summer reading collection. Try to come Monday to get some of those great deals.

On Wednesday, come out and support our cheerleaders and basketball players at 3:30 and 4:15pm as they learn their skills, sportsmanship and teamwork. Admission is $2.00 for anyone school-age and older and concessions are also available for purchase.

Motivational Monday will be a day to honor Autism Awareness Week with the Light it Up Blue day. This fits perfectly with wearing blue or Carolina attire to support our official team for the tournament, as well as allows others to wear shades of blue to show our schoolwide support of students and adults in our school community who have autism or autistic family members.

Please remember that we need families to support our Great Clean-up Efforts on Saturday, April 6 from 8:30-12pm. Bring as many people as you like, help us pick-up around our school and the immediate community around us with the Konnoak Hills Neighborhood Association and Philo-Hill. Remember, lunch is provided, so bring everyone. Participants can sign up on Saturday.

D-Unity practice this Friday is for the Travel Team members.

Report Cards will be sent home on Tuesday.

Lastly, please remember that if a student is absent, a note must be sent to the office regarding the absence for it to be excused. Notes on Dojo to the teacher are great but do not replace the need for notes to be on-file for attendance records.

We hope to see you Monday night to help us figure out how to best help your student have a successful 4th quarter. Let's finish strong!!!

Monday's Motivational Day will be Spring into Action with Spring Colored Shirts. Join us and let's celebrate that Spring season arrived last Wednesday and it's time for us to Spring into Action to get ready for the 4th Quarter.

Please remember that students are involved in End-of-Quarter Assessments this week on different assigned days. Monday is make-up teseting day for last week, Tuesday is 3rd grade Math, Wednesday is 4th grade Math and Thursday is 5th grade Math. K-2 grade teachers are also assessing students on 3rd quarter standards to prepare report cards. Please remember that Friday, March 29 is a regular school day to make up for a snow day in the winter.

This Wednesday, we will have basketball games at 3:30pm and around 4:15pm. Please come out and support our basketball players and cheerleaders. Admission is $2.00 for anyone 5 and older and concessions are available for purchase.

Friday's D-Unity practice will be for grades 2nd and 3rd grade.

We want to remind parents that April 1 is Student-Led Conference Night. All teachers will be available from 5:30-6:30pm for conferences. We also need all parents to attend this conference for information on reading standards and ways that you can help support your child to become a proficient reader and what that means so you know your child's status compared to grade level expectations.

It is also important for you to come April 1st for the kickoff of our Book Fair, which will be open from 3:00-6:30pm for you to help your child build a love of reading with a few good books. We hope to see you there.

We want parents to know that report cards will be sent home the week of April 1 in our weekly folders.

We invite parents and families to join us for the Great American Cleanup in the Konnoak Hills community. Konnoak, Philo Hill and the local Konnoak Hills Association will be teaming to improve our community on Saturday, April 6 from 8:30-12:00pm. We will meet you in our school's bus lot for breakfast snacks and lunch will be provided, so bring family and friends. We need 30 participants, so please call Ms. Silva and sign-up if you are willing to attend this event to help us make this a success. It takes a village to take care of our community.

Thank you and have a great evening.

Posted by Shelia Burnette on 3/17/2019 6:30:00 PM

    Greetings Cardinal Nation,
This is Dr. Burnette with this week's announcements. Special thanks to Mrs. D, our instructional facilitator, the math team, the teachers and especially the students for a great Math Night on Thursday, followed by two exquisite March Math Madness Competitions on Friday with Ms. Foster's Class winning the Addition Tournament and Ms. Medwinter's 5th graders winning the Multiplication Tournament. Congratulations to all of our student and staff contestants for celebrating the spirit of Math Madness.

Monday's Motivational theme is to wear green for St. Patrick's Day and the Irish traditions related to this celebration. Students are welcome to join staff in wearing green for good luck and positivity.

This week, we want to remind parents that we will have basketball and cheerleading practices as designated on Monday and Tuesday, followed by another two exciting games on Wednesday beginning at 3:30pm. Admission is $2 for anyone 5 and older and the funds go to directly support the extracurricular programs, equipment, and celebration at the end of the season. Please remember concessions are also sold thanks to our awesome concession team!

Students will be participating in end of quarter assessments this week and next week as the third quarter comes to an end. Please make sure students are present at school by 8:15am, that they study and review their notebooks and that they understand the importance of doing their personal best to show their individual growth on the standards they learned this quarter.

On Thursday, we will have our March School Improvement Team Meeting from 7-8:30am. We invite parents to come and be a part of learning about our plan for continuous improvement and to help us with parent perspective on ways to enhance our program for all children.

Friday's D-Unity Practice will be the 4th and 5th grade D-Unity Dancers per Mr. Gordon's schedule.

Lastly, please remember that teachers have been directed to alert parents of students who are at-risk of possible retention based on academic status, excessive attendance and/or regression of skills and lack of growth. These decisions are not made until the end of the year, but this is to help parents understand the significance of students getting all of the help and support possible. This includes the fact that we have invited 200 students to tutoring who need this support and only 50% of them have registered. These slots will be opened up to other families who desire to have their children get tutoring support beginning on Monday so that we can grow as many students as possible with our afterschool tutoring program. So, please turn in tutoring forms immediately for first come, first serve placements. Forms turned in after Monday will not be eligible for bus transportation and will have to be car riders. Any questions, reach out to your child's teacher or Dr. Burnette. Thank you and have a great week!

    Greetings, Cardinal Nation,
This is Dr. Burnette calling with this week's announcements.

Thank you to every student and parent who participated in Club Konnoak from December to February. Our Staff leaders did a fabulous job of engaging all participants and we enjoyed the chance to provide this enrichment to students and parents. The last session of Club Konnoak was last Wednesday. Please make sure students remember that Club Konnoak is over for the year.

We are beginning to plan our Academic Achiever's Academy for mid-March-May. Students will be invited to this afterschool tutoring program based on their performance data for the year. While we wish we had funding to serve all students who could benefit from tutoring, we will have to follow identification criteria to invite students to receive Reading and Math Tutoring. Stay tuned for more announcements about invitations being sent, please return them immediately and indicate your child's commitment to attending and participating to reserve their spot if they receive an invitation.

We will have a School Improvement Team meeting on Thursday, February 28 at 7am and invite parents to join us to help in school decision-making and input.

This week, we will be celebrating Read Across America Week and fliers were sent home on Friday. The spirit days include:
Monday: Fox in Socks Day--Wear Crazy Socks
Tuesday: Green Eggs & Ham--Wear Green
Wednesday: Wacky Wednesday--Wacky/Crazy Hair and clothes Day
Thursday: Cat in the Hat Day--Wear your favorite hat
Friday: Read Across America Parade--Dress as your favorite book character

We also invite any parent, grandparent or guardian to come in and be a Guest Reader on Friday to Read Aloud a Dr. Seuss book to a class. Please contact Ms. Pellam, Media Coordinator, to get assigned to a class to read in English or Spanish. We hope we have readers of various languages join us!!!

Parents are also reminded that students may not be dropped off at school prior to 7:45am when supervision is available and to keep students safe. We did have students dropped off before 7:30am and that is a safety issue. Parents please make sure students are not dropped off too early or we may have to contact agencies to help us make sure that students are safely supervised by parents before 7:45am. We know that you will help us maintain student safety and we appreciate your help on this.
