Cardinal Update for May 18, 2020Posted by Shelia Burnette on 5/17/2020 6:00:00 PM
Greetings Cardinal Nation,
This is Dr. Burnette with this week's announcements.
The Meal Pickup/Delivery Schedule will be different over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Friday, May 22, our free meal locations will distribute/deliver enough meals to families for Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Memorial Day Monday. The cafeterias distributing food will be closed Monday, May 25 for the holiday. They will be reopen on Tuesday, 5/26 for meals Tuesday, and then they will be open again on Wednesday, 5/27. From Wednesday 5/27 on, they will go back to their normal schedule of Mon., Wed., Fri. Families may check the WSFCS website to see this schedule.
We were also asked to remind everyone about the 2020 Census. Our community/county continues to need participation in the Census. Encourage your families to take a few minutes and get counted. Having accurate numbers means we get the funding we need from the Federal Government for not only schools, but roads, and other areas that impact daily life. 2020census.gov is the place to go to get counted!
Kindergarten and New Student enrollments are continuing at the WSFCS Administrative Building. To enroll for 2020-2021, please go to the district website or call to find out how to complete enrollment online.
We will begin identifying students who must attend summer school and will be communicating with parents with more details in the next two weeks. Please plan accordingly for students who must attend.
Thank you for continuing to have your students engage in e-learning everyday until June the last days of e-learning. Students should be engaging in lessons, music practice for celebrations, guidance activities in June and possibly even field day with Mr. Gordon. So, please make sure everyone stays engaged and active until the last days of school.
Thanks for all that you do to partner with us. Remember that we must give our best to be the best, even when no one is watching. We must have self control to reach our goals by showing conduct, achievement, responsibility and effort. Let's finish strong Cardinal Nation!!
Cardinal Update for May 11, 2020Posted by Shelia Burnette on 5/10/2020 6:00:00 PM
Greetings and Happy Mother's Day to those who serve as Mothers in our Cardinal Nation.
This is Dr. Burnette calling to share a few district and school reminders.
Friday, May 8 was the last day for families to check out chromebooks and hotspots. We may not distribute any more devices, but we do have paper packets available in the office for families who do not have internet access or devices. New Packets can be picked up and completed packets can be returned between 10am-3pm Monday-Thursday.
If you experience difficulty with your chromebook or hotspot, please call the Hotline number or take the devise to the Technology Depot at 4801 Behtania Station Rd between 8am and 4pm Monday-Friday.
The district will soon communicate the plans for turning in devices and other end of year activities to help parents return chromebooks and hotspots while also picking up students' personal items at the same time.
Lastly, we want to thank our parents and families for your great support in sharing/showing your thanks and appreciation for our teachers! We had some awesome celebrations for our staff. Parents are also welcomed to bring appreciation gifts and items on the date that you are given to return devices and to pick-up personal property later in May.
We miss our Cardinals and are already planning for 2020-2021 school year when we get to welcome our Cardinals back into the nest. In the meantime, please make sure students are doing daily lessons online or in the packets so they can demonstrate proficiency of standards for the 4th quarter. These grades will help teachers to summarize the students' progress and growth on the final report card. Students who are not engaging in e-Learning and/or at risk of retention will be receiving a letter from the district regarding expectations and the need to attend summer opportunities to help to close their gaps, so please help your child succeed and show growth.
Have a great week and take care of yourselves. Cardinals, remember that you must give your best to be the best, even when no one is watching. You must have self-control to reach your goals, by showing conduct, achievement, responsibility and effort. Have a great week, Cardinals!

Greetings, Cardinal Nation,
This Dr. Burnette calling with this week's announcements.
On Friday, we honored our Cafeteria Team for their dedication to serving our students and the community through the school closure period. Please join us in thanking Mrs. House, our cafeteria manager, and her team for making a difference everyday. They are Lunch Superheroes everyday!!!

On Tuesday, please make your teacher smile or laugh with a picture or video via Class Dojo.
On Wednesday, feel free to give teachers/staff a digital gift or the gift of letting them know how they have changed your life.
On Thursday, share an inspirational song with your teacher. You can sing it or send a video link. and
On Friday, use social media, like Tweeting with our account for CardinalPride16 to give a positive shout-out to your child's teacher.
As you have had the chance to experience the role of a teacher in this school closure, we hope that you will help all of our staff know how much you appreciate their effort, commitment and dedication for every child because we have one of the best teams in the county, state and nation.
Please make sure to check Class Dojo once a day for Class Story and School Story postings of announcements. Once a week, Ms. Richardson, our Parent Involvement Coordinator, shares a message for families and I share a message celebrating birthdays for the week. So, please check this daily to keep updated on school and class announcements.
Parents, please continue to have your students log on everyday, to complete assignments and to practice on iStation and iReady. This work will help make sure they don't have learning gaps and help us to prepare them for their next grade. Students who have not been logging on or receiving work will receive a letter from the district regarding the students' academic risk. This is the last week that anyone will be able to checkout laptops or Chromebooks. So, if your child is in need of internet access, please call the school between 10am-2pm this week. We will open the office Monday-Thursday from 10am-2pm for you to pick-up while devices last.
Lastly, please know that the district is working on designating a timeline for when students will be able to come to the school to pick up their private property from your desk. We will share more about this once details have been finalized so that we can follow the governor's and mayor's mandates at that time for everyone's safety and wellness. Yet, we'll be glad to see our Cardinals on campus at this time.
Cardinals, please remember that you must give your best to be the best, even when no one is watching. You must have self-control to reach your goals, by showing conduct, achievement, responsibility and effort.
Cardinal Update for April 27, 2020Posted by Shelia Burnette on 4/26/2020 6:00:00 PM
Greetings Cardinal Nation,
This is Dr. Burnette with 3 very important announcements.
First, as you have heard, based on the Governor's announcement on Friday, school buildings will be closed for the remainder of the year and we will continue to operate with remote or e-learning for classes until school ends in June. Please note that the school year is not over until June. While we absolutely miss having our Cardinals in the halls and classrooms at Konnoak, the relationships with staff, students and parents, and the opportunity to participate in annual events for the Cardinal Nation, we also value every member of our community and want everyone to be safe and healthy through this difficult time. We look forward to learning more about summer programs and to reuniting with our Cardinals for the Fall and will keep you informed.
Please know that we are working on planning non-traditional ways to carry out events for the rest of the year and we welcome your ideas. We will have a virtual School Improvement Team Meeting on Wednesday, April 29 at 8am on Zoom to begin some of this planning, so please contact Dr. Burnette by Class Dojo if you would like the information to join this meeting with the Team.
Thirdly, we wanted to make sure that you are looking out for 3rd Quarter Report Cards mailed Friday. These grades reflect only traditional in-school grades prior to March 16 and reflect how the students performed on 3rd Quarter standards. Mailings also included a district Report Card letter, an attendance report and at-risk of retention notices to students who have been at-risk 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarter. A few additional letters will be mailed to families if students are at-risk due to beginning-of-the-year to middle-of-the-year assessments and/or excessive absences and low performance. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher or Dr. Burnette for clarification. All students have 4th quarter to improve and enhance their grades, which will help us know how to place students for the next school year, as well as help us to know who will need to attend a summer program.
Meals will continue to be served Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am-2pm in the cafeteria for the remainder of the year. Please use the bus parking lot driveway. The office is open every Tuesday from 10am-2pm. Also, remember if you have technology problems during the week, please use the Hotline number given to every family with your devices and they will assist you.
Families, we want to say a special thank you to the parents, grandparents, older siblings and neighbors who have helped students set-up work stations, submit their work and navigate their daily lessons. We can help all students grow during this period if we follow our plan, hold high expectations for students and communicate with each other. You are amazing educational partners and I am proud to be the principal of a dedicated and student-centered staff, a committed and hard-working group of family members and awesome focused students who know that they must give their best to be the best, even when no one is watching. We must have self-control to reach our goals by showing conduct, achievement, responsibility and effort. Much love to you, Cardinals!!!
Cardinal Update for April 20, 2020Posted by Shelia Burnette on 4/19/2020 6:00:00 PM
Greetings Cardinal Nation,
This is Dr. Burnette. We hope that you had a fun, safe and relaxing Spring Break, which you deserved. We have been proud of the hard work that you have done since March 19. Now, we welcome you back to learning online tomorrow.
To help you transition back into e-learning and working online, Monday will be a "Return to Learn Day" that will include fun learning activities, possible virtual field trips for you and your family, and other "review activities." Please log-on to your PowerSchool Learning page and see what's in store for you. Teachers will have limited access to students on Monday, as they will be completing 3rd quarter report cards. Teacher Assistants and Specials Teacher will be available and checking in on students. Classroom Teachers will resume daily online learning starting Tuesday.
Families that signed up for Hotspots need to pick them up Tuesday between 10am-2pm, our office hours. Families that need internet, wifi or hotspot access should email Dr. Burnette at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 336-703-4163 and leave a message requesting a Hotspot with your students' names, your name and the best number to reach you. We will get back in touch with you because we know that 4th quarter grades will be based on students completing all assignments from March 16 to the last day of school so they don't fall behind academically. All K-5 student work is online starting April 20th so everyone must log-on for daily attendance & to complete work.
Free Meals for anyone birth to 18 years-old will be distributed at Konnoak and selected sites on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only starting this week between 10am-2pm. Please use the bus lot driveway to access the back of the cafeteria for pick-ups.
Report Cards are scheduled to be available on Parent Portal on April 24 and sent to parents via email on April 27. We need every parent to update their email address by emailing me at email@example.com with your students' name(s) and your name.
Lastly, as we await government decisions about returning to school, we continue to prepare students for 4th quarter standards and to prepare for end-of-year events. Please help your student understand that the year is not over and we need them to be ready to return to learning May 18 until we hear differently. We also invite PreK, Kindergarten and Fifth Grade families to help us prepare for promotion ceremonies by sending a picture of your child from baby to age 5 and a current picture of them to your child's teacher. Any families with e-Learning pictures are also encouraged to share those with an administrator or Mrs. Coe through Class Dojo message for the yearbook.
As we work through this unique period in our lives of being away from each other and traditional school, please know that Team Konnoak staff members miss you, love you and can't wait to see you again. We believe in you and are here for you if you need us. Go Cardinals!!
Cardinal Update for April 13, 2020Posted by Shelia Burnette on 4/13/2020 6:00:00 PM
Greetings, Cardinal Nation,
This is Dr. Burnette's Weekly call with updates.
Parents, please check Class Dojo daily for announcements on the school story and class story from your teacher. Class Dojo is how we celebrate our all-star staff and students, as well as the best way for parents to communicate with teachers and administrators in private messages.
We hope you are enjoying Spring Break, which continues through April 19th. We return to e-Learning and instructional days online Monday, April 20th and will continue 4th quarter work. The focus on the 4th quarter is to enhance learning for students and prepare them for the next grade level, so each assignment, lesson and task will be important for 4th quarter grading. Getting online daily to do lessons is not an option, it is an expectation. Students will only need to log on to one Specials PowerSchool Page per day to match their usual Specials Schedule for Art, Music, PE, Guidance, Media or MakerSpace.
Free Meals will be given out Monday, April 13 and Wednesday, April 15 this week from the bus lot entrance to the cafeteria. Children 18 and under will receive meals for multiple days to help while the building is closed.
The office is closed April 13-20 and will reopen only on Tuesdays beginning, April 21 from 10am-2pm. You may leave messages on the voicemail daily between 7:45am-3:30pm and messages will be forwarded to the appropriate staff member. The WSFCS Hotline also re-opens on April 20th for computer or technology problems.
Lastly, please make sure all missing work has been submitted to the teacher, as grades will be completed on Monday, April 20th and finalized for parents to review on PowerGradebook beginning April 24th. On Monday, students will participate in some fun learning activities and may even be taking a virtual field trip to help them "return to learn" smoothly and to allow teachers time to complete report cards.
Thanks for all that you do and please remind our Cardinals that we must give our best to be the best, even when no one is watching. We must have self-control to reach our goals, by showing Conduct, Achievement, Responsibility and Effort. We miss you, we care about you and we are here for you!
Cardinal Update for March 29, 2020Posted by Shelia Burnette on 3/29/2020 3:00:00 PM
Greetings Cardinal Nation,
This is Dr. Burnette reaching out to say that we miss having our Cardinals in the Nest and can't wait until you return in May. However, we are extremely proud of the Cardinal Nation for the response to e-Learning and your dedication to helping us continue to grow our students towards excellence.
Here are a few reminders and updates for our families:
*We will continue serving free breakfast and lunch at Konnoak from 10am-2pm, even during the shelter-in-place ordinance. Families will just need to use the bus lot driveway, go to the back of the school and enter the side door of the cafeteria to pick-up their meals for all students 18 and under.
*We still need Kindergarten and 1st grade families to pick up your new learning packets and to turn in the original packets. Also, if we have K-5th grade students who have internet access but no computer or device in the home, please come and check one out to the household on Monday and Tuesday of this week from 10am-2pm in the main office.
*Please note that Konnoak's office will only be open Monday and Tuesday of this week and closed the rest of the week.
*If students have questions about eLearning assignments, please reach out to teachers, first. If they continue to have questions, use the Student eLearning Help Form on the district webpage or the Hotline at 336-661-3128. If you have computer/technology problems, please call the hotline number or take the devices to the Repair/Replace Depot at 4801 Bethania Station Road.
*Please note that all 2nd-5th grade students must be doing lessons on the PowerSchool Learning Page in order to complete required assignments. As the district announced Thursday, grading will continue, but we will work with families still experiencing WiFi connectivity trouble. Just communicate with your teacher.
*We need every family on Class Dojo to receive regular updates, communication from teachers, and schoolwide events or announcements.
*Remember Monday is a Teacher work day. Activities included in your packet for Monday are optional practice opportunities, but not required since Monday is a Teacher Workday. Staff will be doing professional development and planning all day.
*Lastly, please join us for our Social Distancing School Spirit Week by Wearing Cardinal colors (red, black) on Monday, walking/playing or learning outside on Tuesday, wearing wacky attire or mismatched socks on Wednesday, Taking a picture of your student/family reading on Thursday, & taking a picture with your family pet or stuffed animal on Friday. Please post these pictures daily to your teacher via Class Dojo.
Cardinals, while we are not together physically, please keep in mind that your administrators, teaching staff, support staff, bus drivers and everyone loves you, we care about you and we want you to continue to do your personal best, even when no one is watching. Anything less than your absolute best is unacceptable.
