• Cardinal Update for March 29, 2020

Posted by Shelia Burnette on 3/29/2020 3:00:00 PM

    Greetings Cardinal Nation,
This is Dr. Burnette reaching out to say that we miss having our Cardinals in the Nest and can't wait until you return in May. However, we are extremely proud of the Cardinal Nation for the response to e-Learning and your dedication to helping us continue to grow our students towards excellence.

Here are a few reminders and updates for our families:
*We will continue serving free breakfast and lunch at Konnoak from 10am-2pm, even during the shelter-in-place ordinance. Families will just need to use the bus lot driveway, go to the back of the school and enter the side door of the cafeteria to pick-up their meals for all students 18 and under.
*We still need Kindergarten and 1st grade families to pick up your new learning packets and to turn in the original packets. Also, if we have K-5th grade students who have internet access but no computer or device in the home, please come and check one out to the household on Monday and Tuesday of this week from 10am-2pm in the main office.
*Please note that Konnoak's office will only be open Monday and Tuesday of this week and closed the rest of the week.
*If students have questions about eLearning assignments, please reach out to teachers, first. If they continue to have questions, use the Student eLearning Help Form on the district webpage or the Hotline at 336-661-3128. If you have computer/technology problems, please call the hotline number or take the devices to the Repair/Replace Depot at 4801 Bethania Station Road.
*Please note that all 2nd-5th grade students must be doing lessons on the PowerSchool Learning Page in order to complete required assignments. As the district announced Thursday, grading will continue, but we will work with families still experiencing WiFi connectivity trouble. Just communicate with your teacher.
*We need every family on Class Dojo to receive regular updates, communication from teachers, and schoolwide events or announcements.
*Remember Monday is a Teacher work day. Activities included in your packet for Monday are optional practice opportunities, but not required since Monday is a Teacher Workday. Staff will be doing professional development and planning all day.
*Lastly, please join us for our Social Distancing School Spirit Week by Wearing Cardinal colors (red, black) on Monday, walking/playing or learning outside on Tuesday, wearing wacky attire or mismatched socks on Wednesday, Taking a picture of your student/family reading on Thursday, & taking a picture with your family pet or stuffed animal on Friday. Please post these pictures daily to your teacher via Class Dojo.

Cardinals, while we are not together physically, please keep in mind that your administrators, teaching staff, support staff, bus drivers and everyone loves you, we care about you and we want you to continue to do your personal best, even when no one is watching. Anything less than your absolute best is unacceptable.

    Greetings Cardinal Nation,
This is Dr. Burnette with this week's weekly announcements.

Thanks to our Office Team, led by Mrs. Warner-Smith, who facilitated Kindergarten Enrollment Thursday of last week. Way to welcome families and incoming Kindergarten students to Konnoak.

Congratulations to Mr. Gordon and the numerous staff members and students who performed the 2020 Black History Program entitled, "Back in the Day" to highlight the power of messages through music over time in Black History. This great experience and the Successful Black History Door Museum Tours on Wednesday were examples of ways we help our students understand and respect the value of history, diversity and culture. We look forward to our celebration of Women in History for the Month of March.

Motivational Monday this week includes Read Across America Day so staff/students can dress as a favorite character, with something about reading or carry around a favorite book for the day. Remember, Motivational Mondays are optional for students but staff enjoy them to start off our week.
Other Motivational Mondays in March will be:
March 9 Marching into March Madness (wear boots day)
March 16 Favorite Team Shirt Day (ACC or College shirt or basketball jersey)

March 22-27 (There will be a spirit week for our Math Tournaments, which will occur on March 27)
March 30 Express yourself day (Wear shirts with motivational words, phrases or sayings on them).

This week, please remember that the basketball schedule includes Zoombies and Black Knights practice on Monday until 4pm, Ballers and Red Bulldogs practice on Tuesday until 4pm and the Week 1 Basketball games will begin Wednesday with the Red Bulldogs and Black Knights playing at 3:30pm and the Ballers and Zoombies beginning around 4:15pm. Admission is $2.00 for school-aged children to adults to help support the Extracurricular Program. Parents please remember that siblings are not allowed to stay afterschool for practices or games, so please plan for someone to meet them at the bus stops.

Also, please note that the 2nd and 3rd grade D-Unity Dancers will practice only until 3:45pm on Friday and Parents should come to the back door near the gym for pick up at 3:45. For any more information on Basketball or D-Unity, please refer to Mr. Gordon's weekly updates.

Please remember that Sunday, March 8 is Daylight Savings Time so please remember to adjust your clocks Sunday morning. And mark your calendars for Third Quarter Check-ins March 19-March 27 and for our next Early Release Day, which is March 18th.
Thanks for all that you do. Please remember that at Konnoak Elementary School achievement, success and growth are our only option. Anything less than our absolute best is unacceptable. Thank you Cardinal Nation!

Posted by Shelia Burnette on 10/20/2019 7:00:00 PM

    Greetings, Cardinal Nation,
This is Dr Burnette with this week's announcements. Thanks to all families, Mr. Overholt, Mrs. D and the Science Committee, the Teacher Presenters and students for making our Title I Family Science Night a success last Thursday. Many of our 2nd-5th grade students have started thinking of ideas to get to work on their projects so they have plenty of time to research, collect data, conduct their experiment and prepare their science boards by the November deadline. If you need help or have questions, please reach out to your child's teacher or to Mrs. D, our Instructional Facilitator, for assistance. Families can come in on Wednesday afternoons at 3:20pm for help with ideas and resources.

We also wanted to thank the Winston-Salem Police Department for selecting Konnoak for their High Five Friday visit last week. It was priceless watching law enforcement welcome, high five and hug students as they entered campus to wish them a happy start to their Friday. Thanks to all who showed them appreciation for visiting Konnoak on their tour.

Motivational Monday will be Think Pink Monday as we continue to honor and celebrate family, staff and friends who are or have battled cancer and are survivors, as well as those who fought the good fight. So, please join us in wearing pink Monday.

Make plans to attend our Family Fall Festival this Friday, October 25. Come enjoy trick or treating, face painting, games, good food, costume contest and the infamous Konnoak Haunted House for those who wish to enter. Family fun for all, so bring your family and friends. Trick or treating at 5:30pm and the festival fun begins at 6pm.

This week all 3rd-5th grade students will be taking their End-of-Quarter assessments and NC Checkins. Please make sure they are at school by 8:20am so we can begin on time for them to show what they have learned in the first quarter.

Also, on Friday, October 25th, we are welcoming children's author Dr. Levin "Chuck" Wilson, III to Konnoak Elementary School. He will present his children's book through a powerful assembly that teaches students that we are all different, the value of uniqueness, self-pride and how to just "Be U" to be happy and accomplish great things. The assembly will be vidoetaped and shared nationally as part of the book's promotion. Therefore, if you have a student who you do not want shown on the video, please let us know so we can seat them to avoid identifiable shots on the recording. Otherwise, we are excited to be one of Dr. Wilson's first schools to share the book and the message and we are proud to be a part of the Be U movement. Parents you are welcome to attend the assembly as well at 9am on October 25th. The author will have "Be U" items available for you to purchase and may allow pictures with the character from the story, Pierre the Penguin. You may even want to order an autographed copy of the book for your family, as I am anxious to do!

This concludes our announcements. Remember that at Konnoak success and achievement are the only options and we accept nothing less than the absolute best from each student, staff member and family member.
