Homework
Homework will be given Monday-Thursday and occasionally on Friday. I do not accept homework as late work. Students must have homework to turn in the day it is due otherwise no credit will be given for homework on that day. I grade homework as a participation grade, simply checking to see that it is complete and that students have tried each of the problems. Students must always show their work on homework problems and explain their thinking. The problems that are assigned for homework will always be a review of what is covered in class earlier that day. If you find that your child is spending too long on homework or struggling, please feel free to contact me so I can work with him/her one on one.
Collaborative Groups
It is my belief that students need to learn how to collaborate and work together. Students today are in a much more collaborative world than when I was in school! For that reason, you will often see students sitting in groups of three to four, talking and discussing the content. I encourage my students to work together to solve tough problems and to be able to thoroughly explain why the math works. Students must be able to do this through writing and verbal explanations.
Math Notebooks
In our room, we use a composition notebook (a spiral notebook is fine as well) for math class. In this notebook we include all worksheets, notes, warm-ups, pretty much anything we do in class will be in there. I like the students to set up their notebooks in the same manner and do notebook checks on occasion. It is important that if you child is absent he/she gets either my class notebook or notes from a friend to fill in missed content. We do not have textbooks that can go home (although we do have an access code for our class book online), so keeping up with the Math Notebook will be very helpful when preparing for tests. We will always paste our worksheets into our notebook so we don't have to worry about misplacing them! Students will also need a three prong folder to keep homework.
