Application Process for Principals and Assistant Principals

Principal Leaders

  • As a part of your online application for the Principal Pipeline, you will be prompted to attach a letter of interest. 

    Instructions: In two pages or less, answer the following questions as a part of your letter of interest.

    1. Why are you interested in being a school leader within Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools?
    2. What strengths, abilities, and skills do you believe make you an effective Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools principal?
    3. What experiences you've had do you feel have prepared you for this role? Include in your letter experiences from the following.
      • How you have lead adults.
      • How you have influenced the goals and outcomes within your school/organization.
      • Ways you've used instructional best practices to impact student achievement.
    4. Provide some measurable results to define your experiences.

Assistant Principal Leaders

  • As a part of your online application for the Assistant Principal Pipeline, you will be prompted to attach a letter of interest.

    Instructions: In two pages or less, answer the following questions in your letter of interest. 

    1. Why are you interested in being a school leader within Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools?
    2. What strengths. abilities and skills do you believe will make you an effective Winston=Salem/Forsyth Schools Assistant Principal?
    3. What experiences you've had do you feel have prepared you for this role? Include results to support these experiences. 
    4. Provide some measurable results to defend your readiness to take on the role of Assistant Principal?

Additional Information Needed

  • Provide the following additional information with your application:

     

    1. A structured resume that provides information about your work and leadership experiences, accomplishments, and results. Instructions are the same for both Principals and Assistant Principals. A sample resume can be found here.
    2. Most recent end-of-year summative performance evaluation 
      • If you do not have the most recent summative evaluation, acceptable alternatives include:
      • Letter from supervisor regarding performance, including the reason why formal evaluation not available
      • Alternative formal evaluation
      • Summative evaluation
    3. A copy of your valid administrator license or be able to complete all principal preparation program requirements by the date outlined in the job posting.
      • To be eligible for selection to a Principal or Assistant Principal position, verification of principal licensure must be completed. 
        • For external candidates who are already licensed: State license AND degree-conferred transcript of a principal preparation program if the license is out-of-state
        • For internal and external candidates not yet licensed: Unofficial transcript that shows anticipated completion or letter from program executive director indicating completion of a principal preparation program by close of the current selection window.
    4. Two letters of recommendation that provide feedback about your demonstration of the competencies, skills, and beliefs being measured in the selection process. Recommendation Form
      • One of these recommendations should be from a current supervisor and one should be from a previous supervisor. These are not confidential recommendations.
      • You can find a copy of the recommendation form, located on our site, to send to each supervisor to complete. Once you receive the complete recommendation forms you should attach them to your application when prompted. 
      • If you are applying for the Principal Pipeline, the recommendations should be from a principal or equivalent. If you are applying for the Assistant Principal Pipeline, your recommendation form must be from your current principal or equivalent level supervisor. 
    5. For Principal candidates, at least three years of experience as a principal or assistant principal (preferred).
    6. At least three years of teaching experience (preferred).
    7. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
