Parkland High School is a Candidate School* for the Middle Years Programme. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Parkland believes is important for our students.
*Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary
Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme, or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. For further
information about the IB and its programmes, visit www.ibo.org
What is the IB Middle Years Programme?
The Middle Years Programme aims to develop internationally minded and active learners, who can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning. The rigorous academic program is designed for self-motivated students, who desire to achieve scholastic excellence and be of service to their community. The MYP framework empowers students to inquire and make connections between their studies and a wide range of issues and ideas of significance locally, nationally, and globally. The result is young people who are creative, critical thinkers, and reflective. Students who complete the MYP are well prepared to advance to the IB Diploma Programme.
Why choose the IB Middle Years Programme?
Research shows that students participating in the Middle Years Programme:
- build confidence in managing their own learning
- learn by doing, connecting the classroom to the larger world
- outperform non-IB students in critical academic skills
- consistently have greater success in IB Diploma Programme examinations
- thrive in positive school cultures where they are engaged and motivated to excel
- develop an understanding of global challenges and a commitment to act as responsible citizens.

Approaches to Learning
Approaches to learning (ATL) are skills designed to enable students in the IB Middle Years Programme to “learn how to learn”. These skills provide valuable support for students working to meet the subject group’s aims and objectives. ATL skills are intended to apply across the curriculum requirements and provide common language for teachers and students to use when reflecting and building on the learning process. ATL skills are also grouped into five categories that span the IB continuum of international education. IB programmes identify discrete skills in each category that can be introduced, practiced, and consolidated in the classroom and beyond.
