Music at Sedge Garden

At Sedge Garden, all students have the opportunity to make music together through singing, playing and moving. At each level, students experience various types of music, explore instruments, and expand their music vocabulary. My goal is to create lifelong musicians by building a strong foundation of music skills.
Students in Kindergarten and 1st Grade begin their music experience through exploration. We learn to find our singing voice, develop a sense of steady beat, and identify the changes in sound that we hear. These skills are built primarily through play! Students learn a variety of singing games, dances, and stories. They are encouraged to make creative choices in movement and sound.
As students move into 2nd and 3rd Grade, they expand their music vocabulary. There is a strong focus on music literacy of pitch and rhythm patterns, while adding to their repertoire of games, songs, dances, and stories.
Students in 4th and 5th Grade begin to focus on making music as an ensemble. Using the skills and vocabulary learned in previous years, students learn to sing harmonies through rounds and partner songs and learn to play the recorder. These ensemble experiences give them a taste for music choices in middle school. Students in these grades also participate in the Mary Starling program, which is a partnership between WSFCS and the Winston Salem Symphony. Students get to attend in-school assemblies featuring instruments from the different families of the orchestra and then attend a symphony performance in 5th grade, free of charge.
Sedge Garden students have the opportunity to share their music skills through performance. It is my goal to provide all students with the opportunity to perform at least twice during their elementary school experience. Performances are done as a grade level in conjunction with PTA meetings.
