Media Center Policies
The Media Center has 4 Student Expectations:

Students respect library materials, spaces, and other patrons.

Students walk instead of run to avoid injury.

Students respect others with the volume of their voices.
- Students keep the media center nice by refraining from eating, drinking, or chewing gum.
Students may check out three books at a time not including class books.The Media Center is open Monday - Friday at 7:30 am. Generally, students may stay after school to work in the Media Center until 3:30 pm on Tuesdays or Thursdays if they have a note from a parent/guardian and one from their teacher and have talked to the media coordinator beforehand . Students should listen to the announcements or observe the classroom clocks for changes in the afterschool schedule.
Collection Development PolicyPurposeThe purpose of this collection development policy is to aid in the management and fiscal responsibility of purchasing materials for Hanes Magnet School Media Center.Mission StatementThe Hanes Magnet School Media Center empowers students to advance in STEM and academics through critical thinking, innovative making, skillful inquiry based researching, heightened literacy, and ethical information use resulting in higher standardized test scores and greater personal accomplishment and enjoyment.PhilosophyThe media center primarily exists to provide Hanes' staff and students with the materials they need for following the proscribed curriculum of the Winston Salem/Forsyth County School System. Our secondary purpose is to encourage literacy through the provision of educational and recreational materials that students are free to self-select, allowing their interests and passions to direct their learning. In accordance with these purposes, we adhere to the Library Bill of Rights from the American Library Association.Description of the Learning CommunityHanes Magnet School serves several distinct populations of students, including those classified Highly Academically Gifted, Academically Gifted, Exceptional Children, and students who are on grade level. These students may come from the area designated as the school zone of Hanes Magnet School or they may have applied to go to the school in order to participate in the special opportunities at Hanes.To serve these different populations, a wide variety of materials are needed in the Hanes Media Center, including but not limited to: hi-low books, literary fiction, general interest fiction, STEM themed non-fiction, graphic novels, magazines, and more.ResponsibilityThe School Library Media Coordinator (SLMC) selects materials for the media center's collection. The SLMC, however, is also responsible for listening to the input of faculty, staff, students, parents and the Media/Technology Advisory Committee.Criteria for SelectionMaterials will be chosen for Hanes Media Center that:1. Support the curriculum2. Support the STEM Magnet theme3. Support the educational, emotional, and recreational needs of the students4. Maintain diversity in format, topics, viewpoints, reading levels, and literary styles.FormatsHanes Media Center will seek to include:- Print materials - This includes books with subcategories such as fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, and magazines.- E-Resources - Currently Hanes Magnet School has access to e-books through Follet Bookshelf, Mackin Via, and Tumblebooks Library and online encyclopedias and databases through NCWiseOWL.- Audio Books – currently Hanes Magnet School has access to audiobooks through Mackin Via and Tumblebooks Library.- Other formats created or not yet created that have a bearing on student interest or learning which will be added when deemed appropriate.Selection ToolsThe SLMC will use professional resources to assist in the selecting of materials for the Media Center, including but not limited to:1. Titlewave collection analysis2. Review Journals such as Booklist and School Library Journal3. Subscription services such as Junior Library Guild4. Recommendations from the Director of Media Services and other SLMCsThe SLMC will also do formal and informal surveys of library users to help guide the selection process for the best possible fit for materials and users.Deselection PolicyItems that have been damaged, no longer support the curriculum, contain outdated or inaccurate information, have not circulated in two or more years, or contain information better represented elsewhere will be weeded from the collection.Challenged MaterialsThe Hanes Media Center abides by the WSFCS Board of Education policy AR 6144 – Challenged Educational Materials when addressing challenged materials in our collection and following the process the policy proscribes.Gifts and DonationsHanes Media Center uses the guidelines below when receiving donations and gifts:-Books must be age appropriate.-Books must be in good condition.-We are not equipped to give receipts to donors for income tax purposes.-We reserve the right to use books in the way we deem best for the school. This means that your donation could be placed in our collection but it could also be used as a prize or passed along to another school or organization.-We do accept monetary donations which we will use to purchase needed resources for our collection. Checks can be made out to Hanes.-Donors who are interested in buying new books for our collection should check with the Media Center staff for suggestions before making a purchase. -
