Hanes became a federal magnet school in 2008. The theme being implemented at Hanes is STEM, science, technology, engineering and math. As a magnet school, teachers infuse these different curricular areas in their instruction. By seeing how math and science can be used in all curricular areas it is our hope that it encourages more students to pursue an education and career in one of these fields.
Project Lead the Way is a pre-engineering elective that is offered at Hanes. In this course students learn basic engineering skills. They learn how to design a product and use their design in the actual building of a model. This is not a required course and students do not have to take it in sixth grade to be able to take it in seventh or eighth grade.
