•  North Carolina Children's Book Awards

I serve as Chairman of the North Carolina Children's Book Award Committee. This program will be a very important part of the media program at Morgan Elementary. There are many awards programs for children's literature, but all are selected by adults. I feel it is vital to give children a voice concerning what they believe to be quality literature and this awards program gives them that opportunity.

Children from all across our state nominate titles each year beginning in November. Our committee of school and public librarians then select the top 15 for both a picture book category, and a junior book category. These nominated titles are then voted on by students in North Carolina in March of each year. After counting each vote, I announce the winning titles in April. We have over 750 schools and public libraries that participate each year.

Our 2010 winners have now been announced!  Rhyming Dust Bunnies , written by Jan Thomas, is the Picture Book winner with 20,501 votes, and The Lemonade War , by Jacqueline Davies, is the Junior Book winner with 2,134 votes! Each author will be attending our NCSLMA conference in October in Winston-Salem, where they will be presented with a plaque in the shape of our state, engraved with their winning title. They will also receive a special North Carolina plate we commission each year from Seagrove Pottery.
The 2012 nominations have now been released for voting in March. These titles can be found at: http://www.plcmc.org/bookhive/nccba/
