• Welcome to fifth grade. My name is Martha Young and I teach fifth grade math and reading and writing. My hours are from 8:15 until 12:15, but I generally arrive at Moore by 7:00 each morning and stay until 1:00-sometimes later. If you need me, call, write a note, or e-mail me. My e-mail address is

    In reading we read the fifth grade anthology selections as well as chapter books in class. Students are expected to also read independently. Spelling is assigned on Friday and and is tested on Wednesday of the following week. Wordly Wise is assigned on Monday and is tested on Thursday of the same week.


    Field Trips
    The cost of our field trips for this year is $20.00.

    Fifth graders are expected to become excellent at math problem solving. It is expected that they know addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. They must also know measurement facts and geometry vocabulary. Weekly tests are given on multiplication/division facts, measurement facts, and geometry vocabulary. 



    Fifth grade students compose many different kinds of writing pieces. The main type they compose is expository. For example, choose your favorite place to visit and give reasons for your choice. Support must be provided in the form of details.


    Accelerated Reader Requirements

    Students must read a fiction book on their level and a nonfiction book on their level
    each month .  Fiction books must have at least 100 pages. Nonfiction books do not have to have 100 pages. The students must score 70 percent or above on an AR test in order to receive credit for the book.
