Kindergarten Phonological Awareness
In years past I was going into Pre-K classes and teaching Phonological Awareness lessons as well as some select Kindergarten classrooms who needed help in that area. This was a great experience for the children and their teachers to really focus on these pre-literacy skills.Rhyming Words- Do these words rhyme: Mop/hop (Yes) Cat/Car (No)
- Which word does not rhyme: Mop, Map, Rap
- Name 2 words that rhyme with Sit...Pit, Hit.
Identifying Sounds- What is the first sound in the word "Bug?" /b/
- What is the last sound in the word "Bug?" /g/
- What is the middle sound in the word "Bug?" /u/
Blending Sounds- What word do these sounds make? m-a-ke..."make"
- What word do these sounds make? m-u-dd-y..."muddy."
Segmenting Words- Tell me all the sounds in the word "chip" ch-i-p.
- Tell me all the sounds in the word "happy" h-a-pp-y
Adding Sounds- If you say the word "oat" and add /b/ to the beginning of the word, what word do you have? "Boat."
- If you say the word "pass" and add a /t/ to the end of the word, what word do you have? "Past."
Deleting Sounds- Say the word "clock" now say it with out the /k/ at the beginning..."lock."
- Say the word "cart" now say it without the /t/ at the end..."car."
Be sure the child tells you sounds and not letters. This is an auditory task.
