I received my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from UNC-Greensboro and my Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education from Salem College. I most recently received my administrative degree from Garner-Webb University.
CurriculumThe Special Children's School uses the Creative Curriculum for Preschoolers. This curriculum is play-based and it focuses on enhancing children's development in the areas of language, gross motor, fine motor, cognitive, self-help, and social/emotional skills. Our school-age class uses the Styer-Fitzgerald Curriculum, The Unique Learning System, as well as the Common Core Extended Standards, which focuses on all areas of development. Our kindergarten classroom follows the North Carolina Common Core Standards.
Assessments
All of our preschool students are assessed using the Teaching Strategies Gold Assessment three times per year. This assessment looks at the areas of Physical Development, Language Development, Academic/Cognitive Development, Daily Living, and Social and Emotional Development. The School Age classrooms use the Styer-Fitzgerald Assessment to find out the base level the students are learning. The students are assessed at the beginning of the school year, middle of the year and at the end of the school year using an assessment in the Unique Learning System. Kindergarten students are assessed the first 60 days of school using the Kindergarten Entry Learning Inventory and are assessed three times a year using MClass as well as the K-2 Math Assessment.
