Teachers have to have appropriate expectations for all of their students. Exceptional Students, students with 504 plans or struggling students in general are no different. If they have the ability and the cognitive means to do so, they should. Our EC students need to have us expect them to do their best and behave accordingly at all times. We should not make excuses for them. We should be able to recognize what they ARE and ARE NOT capable of. Never allow their disability to determine what their capabilities are.
Modifications do not necessarily mean cutting an assignment in half. A modified assignment is based on the individual need of the student and created by the discretion of each teacher. For example, a teacher may have a student complete an assignment and grade the first half, two-thirds or greater of the assignment. A teacher may have a student type an assignment rather than write it out or provide the student with more time to complete the assignment. The teacher may provide the student with a differentiated assignment that he or she will be able to complete rather than the assignment provided to the entire class.
