We have been fortunate to have both academic institutions as well as businesses who partner with us to provide enriching opportunities for our students. This includes guest speakers for the classroom, field trips, exhibitors for STEM Fairs, curricular support, or internships and job shadowing opportunities. We have some outstanding students who have excelled in our STEM courses. We want to offer those students an opportunity to apply for summer internships prior to their senior year. An internship generally consists of 80-160 hours of work-related experience. The coordinator will determine determine who qualifies to apply and invite the students to do so. Qualifications include a 3.0 GPA and be in good standing with grades, attendance, and discipline. The students would apply and be interviewed like any other employee. The school coordinator will meet with the internship sponsor and together draw up a job description for the internship experience. The sponsor will be asked to complete two evaluation forms on the student. The student will be asked to complete a journal and presentation on their experience. The school coordinator will be available to both the student and sponsor should any concerns arise during the internship experience, and will conduct periodic site visits during the internship.
If you are interested in participating as a sponsoring institution for our internship program, please contact the school coordinator, Terry Howerton at thowerton@wsfcs.k12.nc.us .
