• Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year!

Posted by Susan Twyman on 8/19/2013
Well, here we go again!  I'm so excited about the new school year.  I look forward to seeing our students, from the new bright faces of our Kindergarten students to the sleepy eyes of the 5th graders.  My office is in the same location, but I have moved my classroom from room 8 in the building to room A3 in the annex.  Please stop by and see me!

  • Busy time of year

Posted by Susan Twyman on 3/26/2012
This time of year is very busy for every school counselor.  For me, middle school registration for the 5th grades, AIG paperwork, classroom guidance, Peer Mediation, small group counseling and individual counseling  along with School Assistance Team paperwork, etc fills my days.  The end of the year for many is filled with excitement, anticipation and, at times, aggravation.  If there is a concern or something that I need to be aware of, please feel free to contact me.  The most efficient way to contact me is by email at stwyman@wsfcs.k12.nc.us.

I will have to be out of town for at least Wednesday and Thursday of this week, maybe Friday, so I will have to cancel the Peer Mediation meeting that is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.  I will meet with the Mediators in December as scheduled.

  • Bully Buster Box

Posted by Susan Twyman on 10/18/2011
The Bully Buster Box is now in the lobby on the table between the two doors to the cafeteria.  I have placed it there so that those students who are uncomfortable talking to an adult face to face can report incidents of bullying that they have witnessed or are experiencing.  It is important that the students only use this to report bullying.  I have emphasized that they refrain from reporting names just to get someone in trouble.  If the Box is used appropiriately, it can be an effective tool against bullying at Southwest.
To report bullying, on a slip of paper write who is the bully, who they are bullying, what they are doing, where it is occuring and when.
The more information I have, the more effectively I can deal with it.  The reporter does NOT have to sign his/her name, although it would be helpful in case there are questions. ALL reporters are anonymous to everyone except Mrs. Twyman (and administration if necessary).

I am so excited about the upcoming year. It certainly will be different.  I hope to be able to accomplish all that I would like.  If anyone is interested in becoming a Volunteer Listener, PLEASE let me know.  We can certainly use the extra ears to listen to the many students who need the special attention.

This week has been very busy.  Although I am very tired, I am pleased with the accomplishments of the week, both mine and the students'.  Hard work, when productive, is rewarding!  How was your week?
