How to Help our ESL Students What is an ESL student? An ESL student is a child or young person whose country is far away and unknown to most of his or her American peers and teachers. 1. Provide a multi-sensory approach.2. Provide Outlines or key words in advance. 3. Limit the use of idioms. 4. Limit vocabulary. Paraphrase. 5. Modify the curriculum. Use short, direct sentences. 6. Speak slowly, but don't distort speech. 7. Maintain the natural rhythms of English speech. 8. Encourage active participation. 9. Don't ask them if they understand. 10. It's OK to copy and share information. 11. Peer tutors. 12. They aren't talking about you. 13. Culture and culture shock. 14. Home visits. 15. Read to them every night in English or in their native language.
