    Social Studies:
Effective for the 2011-2012 school year and beyond, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools has adopted the Essential Standards for Social Studies Instruction for students in grades K through 5.  These standards have replaced the NC Standard Course of Study, which was previously used to guide social studies instruction.

    Science:
Also effective for the 2011-2012 school year and beyond, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools has adopted the Essential Standards for Science Instruction for students in grades K through 4.  These standards have replaced the NC Standard Course of Study, which was previously used to guide science curriculum and instruction.

Effective for the 2012-2013 school year, students in grade 5 will also be taught and tested based on the Essential Standards for Science Instruction.

The Essential Standards are written using the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy (RBT), which will help move to the complex thinking expected from 21st Century graduates. The RBT was chosen because it has well-defined verbs and is built on modern cognitive research.
