Why Join Band At East Forsyth? Big time opportunities in a small town!

There are six different band classes for you to be a part of. Read about them below.

    Concert Band Offerings:

We have three levels of Concert Band: The Wind Ensemble is an audition based band that plays Grade V music and attends MPA every spring. The Symphonic Band is based on director recommendation and/or audition, and plays grade IV music. This year we are bringing this band to MPA as well. We also have a Concert Band, which plays grade III music, and prepares students to be successful members of our other bands. Our Wind Ensemble regularly receives Excellent and Superior ratings at MPA.

We have been fortunate at East to be very well represented at All County, All District, and All State Band. We have averaged 18-20 students a year in All County Band, and 8-10 students a year in All District Band. We have had several students invited to audition for All State, and have had students make it in two of the past four years. Additionally, we bring students to Western Regional Orchestra auditions, and have had students make the orchestra in three of the past five years. Due to their high seating in All County Band, over a dozen East students have been invited to perform with the Piedmont Wind Symphony at their side-by-side concert in March.

    Symphony Orchestra Class:

This is an opportunity unique to East Forsyth High School. Initially conceived as a way to have two classes meeting at the same time, we have turned our orchestra and band classes into a combined symphony orchestra, complete with strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. We bring an atmosphere similar to that of a Youth Symphony to the school day at East. This group will attend Orchestra MPA this spring.

    Marching Band:

The Blue Regiment Marching Band meets after school three days a week during August, September, and October. We are highly successful at competitions, regularly finishing at the top of our class. We support the football team at all home and away games, and compete on select Saturdays in October. We also participate in local parades. We invest heavily in our marching band, commissioning custom music and drill, and hiring the best staff to work with our kids. It is both family-oriented in our educational approach, and business-like in our work ethic. It is a great way to meet people before the school year even begins.

    Jazz Band Offerings:

We have two levels of Jazz Band that meet during the school day: Our top Jazz Band (A) is considered one of the top jazz bands in North Carolina. We were honored to be selected to perform at the statewide music educator’s convention this fall. The performance afforded us the opportunity to work with the one and only BBC Big Band director, Mr. Jiggs Whigham. He actually flew in from Europe, came to East, and ran a rehearsal in our bandroom. The next day he performed with us at the convention.

Jazz Band A performs 10-15 times per year, in a variety of settings. We play for Music at Twilight annually, as well as private parties, grand openings, festivals, retirement homes, and most any function you can think of. This prestigious group is open by audition only.

Jazz Band B is considered a training group for the upper group (A). It allows students to switch to traditional jazz instruments, and gain an understanding of swing music. We work on improvisation, rhythm reading, and style, while learning appropriate repertoire. This group is open by audition or recommendation.

Jazz Band A has received multiple Superiors at Jazz MPA, and has had good representation at West Region Jazz the past two years. We were also fortunate to have the All State Jazz drumset player in 2011, our own Stephen Scott. Due to the reputation of our group, college professors regularly work with the band, which has led to a number of students playing in collegiate jazz ensembles, most without even needing to audition. We have had students go on to join jazz bands at UNC Chapel Hill, ECU, High Point University, UNC Pembroke, Greensboro College, Pfeiffer University, and Bridgewater College.

The East Forsyth Band Program wants you to join!!! Music is an important part of a balanced high school experience. It is the class you look forward to, a time to leave behind the outside stresses of the school day. Band offers the chance to make valuable friendships, challenge yourself mentally and physically, and be part of something bigger than yourself. It looks great on college applications, and helps maintain a healthy GPA. I am often asked to write college recommendations, as I tend to know the students better than other teachers after four years of band.
