Welcome to speech-language therapy.  My name is Gayle Heyer. I am one of the Speech-Language Pathologists at Morgan Elementary.   I earned an undergraduate degree in Communication Disorders from Hampton University; a Master’s degree in Education of the Hearing Impaired from Bloomsburg State University and a Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  I am the proud mother of three young men and three fur babies (dogs).

I try to make each speech therapy session a fun but always educational experience.  Students may do articulation or language drills to learn concepts or play games to have fun as they learn.

I supply all of my students with speech folders.  The purpose of the speech folder is to motivate the students to work hard and as a communication tool.  Each time a student has a speech session, I write a brief summary of that day’s lesson in the folder. That way you always have an idea of what is happening in speech therapy.  Students receive stickers if the accuracy level is 80% or better. They get a stamp if the accuracy is below 80% but they always earn something. When they fill a row (6 stickers and/or stamps), they get to pick a prize out of the prize box. This could include small toys or candy.

Every year we are required to meet and discuss your child's speech and language progress and develop new goals and objectives.   A few weeks before your child's IEP is due, an invitation will be sent home to invite you in for the meeting. After the meeting, you will be given a copy of your child's IEP for your records. Every 3 years a reevaluation will be conducted to determine whether continued services are needed. Please call me if you have any questions concerning your child's IEP.

I am very excited to be working with your child this year.   If you have questions or concerns- call me 336-703-4148 or e-mail me at gheyer@wsfcs.k12.nc.us.  I will reply to your call or e-mail at my earliest convenience.
