• The ABC’s Of 1st Grade

If your child is absent, please send a note with your child on the day they return back to school.  If the school does not receive a note, the absence will be recorded as unexcused.

The students will have Art class every Day 5. *See BEE BINDER’S Monthly Behavior Chart for “Specials” schedule.

Bee Binders help keep us organized.  The 3-pronged binder contains your child’s homework, your child’s daily behavior, and other items that assist with communication between home and school.  BEE BINDERS are to be brought to school EVERYDAY.

Monthly Behavior Chart is to be initialed by parent each night.

If you would like to send a birthday treat with your child on or near his/her birthday, please feel free to do so.  These treats will be eaten during our lunchtime (12:20-12:50).  Please do not send birthday party invitations to be distributed unless all children receive an invitation.

I will send home book order forms for you and your child to look over every month.  Book clubs offer books at reduced prices.  It is a great way to build your child’s home library.

Parent and Teacher Conferences are very important.  My goal is to meet with each of you at least 2 times this year, at the end of 1st quarter and 3rd quarter.  Watch for information and reply accordingly.

Communication is important.  Feel free to contact me whenever you have a question, comment, or concern.  You can reach me by phone (595-2311), in person, by note, or by email (jjalbano-miller@wsfcs.k12.nc.us).

Our class will have Computer/Technology class every Day 1.  *See BEE BINDER’S Monthly Behavior Chart for “Specials” schedule.

Discipline is simple. We work hard as a class to make the classroom a positive and safe place for all.  Your child’s daily behavior is recorded and sent home each day.  A GREEN day is a GREAT DAY! YELLOW day means your child had to move their “clip” one time, and received a warning. RED day means your child had to move their “clip” twice, and had to sit in time out.  BLUE day means your child had to move their “clip” three times, and a note is sent home.  PURPLE day means their “clip” was moved four times, and child was sent to the office to speak to Dr. Jones.  You will be called immediately if your child is on PURPLE.

My school email address is jjalbano-miller@wsfcs.k12.nc.us .  I check email daily.  If you have an email address that you’d like me to be aware of, please let me know.

Information about Field Trips will come home in the BEE BINDER and will be detailed on the field trip permission slip.

Our class will have Gym/PE every Day 2.  The children are asked to wear athletic shoes on gym days.  *See BEE BINDER’S Monthly Behavior Chart for “Specials” schedule.

In First Grade your child will need to master 125 High Frequency Words. Many of the students still need to master the Kindergarten list of 53 High Frequency Words, and some are ready for the 2nd Grade list!  Your child’s BEE BINDER contains ALL 3 lists.  Please practice these words each night.  These are sight words; so your child should be able to read them quickly, and not have to sound them out.

Students will not have homework until the first full week after Labor Day.  All homework for the week is assigned on MONDAY and must be returned back to school on FRIDAY.

    Reading Homework:

Students will receive a READING BAGGIE that contains 2 books for the week.

Monday: Read Book 1 (Parent’s initial Reading Log).

Tuesday: Re-read Book 1 (Parent’s initial Reading Log).

Wednesday: Read Book 2 (Parent’s initial Reading Log).

Thursday: Re-read Book 2 (Parent’s initial Reading Log).

Friday: Return Reading Baggie to school.

*Reading Logs will be checked daily for parent’s initials, so please keep Reading Log in Bee Binder.

    Math Homework:

Students will receive 2 types of Math. 1) Minute Math, which is a timed math exercise. 2) Daily Review Math. *ALL math homework is to be turned in on FRIDAY.

Independence is a goal for students because it builds self-esteem and self-confidence.  1st Graders are very capable of doing many things on their own.  I encourage them to do as much as they can for themselves in the classroom.  Please work on the following self-help skills with your child: zipping, tying, dressing, etc.

When a child has mastered all 125 High frequency Words, they will earn all 4 scoops on their ICE CREAM CONE.  To celebrate the children’s hard work and effort, we have a big Ice Cream Sundae party at the end of the year.

Writing takes place every day in 1st Grade.  One way to accomplish this is through writing stories in our journals during writing time.  Encourage your child to write at home (grocery list, a letter to grandparents, etc.).

Keep updated by checking your child’s BEE BINDER every day for notes and information.  Also your child will receive a “Wednesday Folder” which contains information from the school.  Please return folder the next day.

Our class will visit the library every Day 6 of “Specials”.  Your child will check out a book when we visit the library and return it the next Day 6.  If your child forgets to return their book, they will not be allowed to check out a new book until it is returned.

Our class eats lunch at 12:20.  If lunch money is sent to the school, please place it in the BEE BINDER.  There is a pencil pouch for this purpose that is located in the front of the BEE BINDER.

The children will have Music class every Day 3 of “Specials”.

The 1st Grade Math Curriculum provides students will mathematical experiences that help them develop number sense and a positive attitude towards mathematics that will continue throughout their schooling career and lives.  Math concepts are covered through our daily calendar and math stations routine.  We will also include entries in our journal to show our math thinking.

Please let me know if any of the information on your child’s information sheet should change during the school year…especially phone numbers.

1st Grade report cards will be sent home EVERY quarter.

    Read, Read, Read!

Please send in a daily snack for your child.  No drinks. We will get water after snack time.

The focus of the 1st Grade Science Curriculum is on developing an awareness of the world in which we live.  Science concepts and skills will be explored utilizing a literacy-based, hands-on approach.

The 1st Grade Social Studies Curriculum focuses on the students and how they relate to others in their families, classrooms, school, and community.  Social Studies concepts and skills will be explored utilizing a literacy-based, hands-on approach.
