• Guidelines for Registering New Students for Atkins STEM Electives

Students should select the major area they wish to pursue from the following areas. Course requirements and prerequisites/co-requisites are listed under each major. All students at Atkins take one class in a major each year until a series of four courses is completed.

If students will be Biotechnology majors, then they must choose  Biotechnology I as the first STEM course.  Students majoring in Health Science or Biomedical Technology must choose   Biomedical Technology I as the first STEM class.

If students major in Engineering, then they must choose  Introduction to Engineering Design as their first STEM elective.

Students majoring in Digital Design and Animation, Digital Media, or Computer Game Design  must take Digital Design and Animation I (formerly Scientific Visualization I) as the first STEM elective.

    Biotechnology

The first course is Biotechnology IBiology is a prerequisite or co-requisite to this course. Students entering ninth grade whose first science course would normally be Earth and Environmental Science and not Biology will take Standard Biology during the falland Biotechnology I during the spring.

Students who are taking Biology as their first science course at Atkins may take both Biology and Biotechnology I (fall semester) and Biomedical Technology I (spring semester) if they wish to do so. Biotechnology I is the first course for the Biotechnology major.

    Biomedical Technology

The first course is Biomedical Technology IBiology is a prerequisite or co-requisite to this course. Students entering ninth grade whose first science course would normally be Earth and Environmental Science and not Biology will take Standard Biology during the fall and Biomedical Technology I during the spring.

    Computer Game Design

The first course is Digital Design and Animation 1Math 1 is a co-requisite.  Students needing Math 1 may take Math 1 in the fall or spring along with Digital Design and Animation 1. Students enrolled in Digital Design and Animation 1 in the fall may enroll in Computer Game Design in the spring if they wish to do so.

    Digital Design and Animation

The first course is Digital Design and Animation 1Math 1 is a prerequisite or co-requisite to this course. Students entering the ninth grade who need Foundations of Common Core Math 1 will take Common Core Math 1 and Scientific Visualization 1 during the second semester.

Students who are taking Math 1 as their first math course at Atkins may take both Math 1 and Digital Design and Animation 1 (fall semester) and Digital Design and Animation 2 (spring semester) if they wish to do so.

    Digital Media

The first course is Digital Design and Animation 1Math 1 is a prerequisite or co-requisite to this course. Students entering the ninth grade who need Foundations of Common Core Math 1 will take Common Core Math 1 and Scientific Visualization 1 during the second semester.

Students who are taking Math 1 as their first math course at Atkins may take both Math 1 and Digital Design and Animation 1 (fall semester) and Digital Media 1 (spring semester) if they wish to do so.

    Engineering

The first course is Introduction to Engineering Design. Math 1 is a prerequisite or co-requisite to this course. Students entering the ninth grade who need Foundations of Common Core Math 1 will take Common Core Math 1 and Introduction to Engineering Design during the second semester.

Students entering ninth grade who need Foundations of Math 1 will take Engineering Essentials as the first course.

Students entering ninth grade who need Math 1 and do not have strong math skills (C or below in Math 8) should also take Engineering Essentials as the first course.

Students entering ninth grade who need Math 1 and have strong math skills (B or higher in Math 8) may choose Introduction to Engineering Design as the first course.

Students entering ninth grade who need Math 2 will take Introduction to Engineering Design as the first course. These students may also take an additional STEM course

    Health Sciences

The first course is Biomedical Technology IBiology is a prerequisite or co-requisite to this course. Students entering ninth grade whose first science course would normally be Earth and Environmental Science and not Biology will take Standard Biology during the fall and Biomedical Technology I during the spring.

Due to the nature of the curriculum, Health Science I (the second course in the series) may not be taken until sophomore year.  If students wish to take a second STEM course, they should consider either Biotechnology I or Principles of Biomedical Science.  Students entering as upper classmen may “double up” on courses as long as prerequisites have been met.
