OCS (Occupational Course of Study) is a school-to-work program designed to provide high school students, grades 9-12, with vocational and work-based experiences,
while also providing relevant academic instruction in the areas
of Math, English, Science, and Social Studies.
In order to earn a standard NC diploma, students must not only pass all course requirements, but also earn work hours
in 3 categories:
SCHOOL-BASED HOURS......300 hours
COMMUNITY-BASED HOURS (CBVT)........240 hours, and
COMPETITIVE/PAID HOURS.....360 hours.
Students are encouraged to volunteer with non-profit organizations during the summer months or on the weekends during the school year. These positions must be pre-approved by the Transition department before any hours can be earned toward graduation. Please request a "prior approval packet" from me before you begin your volunteer experience.
There is currently a "waiver" in place with the state that allows volunteer hours to be counted as paid hours!!!
So go out and VOLUNTEER!!
