Mr. David Draper

This is my fourth year at Hanes Magnet School. After three years in Eighth Grade Science, I will be moving to join the Project Lead the Way team with Natalie Norman and John Boyd. I am very excited for this new opportunity. I have completed three weeks of PLTW training - Design and Modeling (sixth grade), Computer Science for Innovators and Makers (seventh grade) and App Creators (eighth grade). I love the curriculum and am sure the kids will enjoy the experience in each of these 21st Century classes. They will have lots of hands on activities and projects tied to real world problems and issues.

I have been married to my lovely wife Rhonda for 30 years, and have three children, Shaina, Ricki and Zack. Shaina and her husband David recently moved to Washington DC. David is working for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Shaina is a social worker. Ricki is studying Geographic Information Systems at Appalachia State University in Boone, NC, set to graduate in the Spring. Zack is working with City Year in Jacksonville, FL.

I am a Rocket Nerd. I coach the Rocket Club and Team America Rocketry Challenge Team at Hanes. I taught rocketry at the WSFCS STEPS camp the last two summers. I have been a rocketry instructor for the UNCG All-Arts Sciences and Technology Camp for the last five years. I have also taught rocketry to cub scouts, boy scouts, elementary and middle grades kids for years. I build and launch high power rockets as a certified member of both NAR (National Association of Rocketry) and Tripoli Rocketry Association. I have traveled to St. Augustine, FL; Orangeburg, SC; Rocky Mount, NC; Culpeper, VA; and the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah to launch my rockets.

I branched out this summer and also taught a class at STEPS camp called Drones Take Flight. In that class we used drones and virtual reality headgear. I hope to incorporate both of those technologies into my classes and extracurricular activities in the years to come at Hanes.
