What's New in the Spring?
Common Core standards for first, second and third grade
RI.1.4 Ask and answer questions to help determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases in a text.
RL.2.4 Describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.
RL.3.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, distinguishing literal from nonliteral language.
This quarter the students in grades 1-3 have been learning why the vocabulary that we study before each lesson is so valuable. In addition to learning the literal names of things and places, second graders learned that rhythm and rhyme can effect the meaning of a poem or story. Third graders have learned about idioms, of figurative language. In other words, when someone says "It's raining cats and dogs" , they don't mean that pets are falling from the sky!
