    Please ACTIVELY (underline, highlight, make notes) read the different vassalage contracts printed on the page after the map on the SECOND page of your Unit 1/Chapter 9 Reading packet.  Then, compare and contrast the five contracts - what are 3(+) commonalities?  Then, what are 5 differences between the contracts. (BTW: the title of the 1st Contract: An Anglo-Saxon Formula of Commendation)



    Please read in your Unit 1 Packet, the Pope Urban II and The First Crusades Speech excerpt. Then, using it and your textbook do the following: 

    Part A
    Write a good-bye letter from a noble to his wife/kids explaining his reasons for going to fight in the Crusades.

    (Part B) write another note from same noble to wife as he makes his way back from Crusades in 1099.  What has he seen and experienced…what do he and his fellow crusaders bring back to Western Europe?

    According to the text (pages lxix-lxxiv of the Introduction/”The West Before 1330”), how did the process/outcome of political consolidation and centralization of monarchial authority in France and England differ from that of the Holy Roman Empire? And how did the 100 Years War (pages 298-302) aid the French and English monarchies in gaining power?

    Evaluate the painting  in terms of the three Renaissance themes, as well as the technical characteristics of Renaissance Art.

    First, read page 363 of the textbook to see what the Peasants were demanding in their Manifesto of the 12 Articles. Then, Read the 3rd page in your Unit 2 Protestant Reformation Packet (front and back).  What was Martin Luther’s attitude toward political insurrection (invoking his name) and towards Jews?

    Read the John Calvin readings in your Protestant Reformation packet.  Compare and contrast Calvin's and Luther's views.  Also, how did Calvin defend his belief in Predestination and against the idea that Predestination might lead one to act immorally and irresponsibly?

    Read, in your Protestant Reformation Packet, The Act of Supremacy (1534) and The Act of Six Articles (1539).  What do these two documents indicate about the Protestant Reformation (at least early on, under the leadership of Henry VIII) in England?  Note the old English writing will make these a bit difficult to read.

    Read the 1st and 3rd articles in your Chapter 13 reading packet (“The English Civil War” and "English Revolution") and refer to pages 423-27 in your textbook....Why is 1642-49 called a "Civil War" while 1688-89 is called a "Glorious Revolution"?  Compare and contrast the two events in English history.  Then, what caused the English Civil War, and would it more accurately be considered a politically-, economically-, or a religiously- based war?  Your ENTRY should be a Thesis Paragraph.
