Dear Parents and Students,
I am delighted to have you in my class and look forward to sharing my passion for French with your child. I have been teaching French for 25 years. Learning a new language has many advantages and can be fun if you allow it to be. The class moves at a quick pace, which means that your child is responsible for his/her own academic achievement. Please stress the importance of daily study so that your child will become proficient in French. You can help by providing him/her with an environment in which he/she can practice speaking French and practice vocabulary- even if you do not know any French- you might even learn some from your child!
Course Description- French I
Students will learn the fundamentals of French through speaking, reading, writing and listening, as well as learn about the culture in francophone countries. This course will include communication skills, presentations in French, French grammar and spelling. Students will learn how to speak about events in the present and past and be able to meet basic needs in French. Students are expected to participate, study and complete all work on time.
Course Description- French II
Students will continue learning the fundamentals of French through speaking, reading, writing and listening. This course will include communication skills, presentations in French, French grammar and spelling. Students will learn how to speak about events in the present and the past and build upon skills learned in French I. Students are expected to participate, study, and complete all work on time in French!
Course Description- French III
Students will continue learning the fundamentals of French through speaking, reading, writing and listening. This course will include communication skills, presentations in French, French grammar and spelling. Students will learn how to speak about events in the present, past, and future and build upon skills learned in French II. Students are expected to participate, study, and complete all work on time in French! Students are expected to speak in French.
Course Description- IB French IV &V
Students will build upon, refine and review previously learned materials through speaking, reading, writing, listening in preparation for the IB exam in their senior year. Students are expected to actively participate, in French only, in class discussions, debates, group activities, presentations, and research.
Supplies required by the end of the first week for French 1,2,3:
- pen or pencil
- Please- kleenex
- flash drive!!
3x5 index cards to make flash cards of vocabulary words.
Supplies required for IB:
1. 2" to 2 1/2 " binder
5. French/English dictionary
6. Sketchbook for INQ notebook project.7. flash drive
Grading Policies for French Grading Scale:
Oral Presentations: 20%
Grading scale follows WSFCS policy.
Pacing: We will cover a chapter every 2-3 weeks in class with frequent tests and quizzes.
Active participation in class is required. Group work, partner activities and in class presentations are expected. You only improve with effort and practice.
All homework assignments are to be completed outside of class. Homework is assigned almost every night. I am available for tutoring sessions.
Late work is NOT accepted for any reason.
Students have 1 day to make up an assignment for each day absent. Failure to make up assignment in this time frame will result in a zero.
Progress reports will be sent home approx every 3 weeks, according to the WSFCS schedule. You may also access the Parent Assistant at any time.
Students are not permitted to leave the room for any reason during class except if called to the office.
Extra credit is rarely offered; when the opportunity arises, students should take advantage of it. I will not assign extra credit to replace work that was not done. However, I am available to help you succeed.
Grading Policies for IB: All assignments will be weighted on the scale mentioned above. However, grading is holistic and graded on the IB rubric. Please see the IB information on my website for the grading scale.
Attendance: More than 12 absences will result in no credit given for the course. 10 tardies results in 1 absence.
Tardies: Follow school policy.
