A little about me....
My name is Katie Cunningham and I have worked as a school counselor since 2008. I received my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Appalachian State University and my Master's of Education in School Counseling from Western Carolina University. As a North Carolina native, I have lived all around the state before settling with my family in Clemmons in 2015. My husband and I have two beautiful children and 3 "furry" children! In my spare time I enjoy reading, camping, and traveling.
As a school counselor, I am here to support students, staff and families. If a student is struggling emotionally, they will have a difficult time reaching their full potential. School counselors can help as part of a comprehensive school counseling program.
I meet with students individually on an as-needed basis to offer brief solution-focused counseling or a listening ear. Students needing a deeper level of support may be referred to an outside agency.
I offer group counseling for a variety of different issues including changing families, Kindergarten skill building, making good choices, social skills, grief and more.
Southwest Elementary has adopted the Second Step SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) curriculum for use with all of our students as a Specials class. A teacher assistant teaches these lessons under my supervision and planning support.
In addition to supervising the SEL Special, I am one of three staff members that teach during the Media+ Special. During my time with the students, I teach about the character trait of the month and career education lessons.
I coordinate many school-wide programs that address the needs of the whole child. These programs include World Kindness Day, Titan Buddy mentoring program with WFHS, Career Days, and helping classroom teachers integrate additional SEL opportunites into their daily lessons.
In addition to the roles listed above, I am the Section 504 coordinator, the Hosptial/Homebound liasion, a member of the MTSS team and the middle school registration coordinator for our 5th grade students.
If I can help...
Feel free to give me a call at the school or send me an email and I will get back to you!
