A graduate of Winston-Salem State University with strong connections to the community, Coach David A. Hamlin is entering his second year as the head football coach at Atkins High School. During his matriculation at WSSU, he was a 3-year letterman athlete in football, a member of the 1987 and 1988 CIAA championship teams, 1988 all-CIAA conference team, and ranked in the school’s top 10 all-time punting average. After his impressive football career, Coach David A. Hamlin graduated in 1992 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
After graduation, Coach Hamlin entered the business sector as a salesman in the car business. He then advanced to become finance manager, used new car manager, and sales manager. After following his calling, he entered the education field in various positions.
Coach Hamlin has an expressive coaching career that spans over 17 years. He began at RJ Reynolds in 1991, and then progressed to Morehead High School in Eden NC, Reidsville Pop Warner team, Winston - Salem Falcons, Lift Academy, and then to Atkins High. While at Atkins, he coached football, boys and girls soccer, and wrestling. Coach Hamlin then returned to RJ Reynolds where he became the JV head coach for football, wrestling, and girls’ lacrosse. In January of 2015, Coach Hamlin returned home to Atkins as the Head Football Coach.
Coach Hamlin’s most important goal is to produce quality young men, and to build character through the love of the game of football. He lives and coaches his team by the motto “Earn It”. He is known to quote his philosophy “My job is to do my job, and to do it well”. Coach Hamlin is married to his beautiful wife Gwendolynn, and has three wonderful children, Mark, Charles, and Allysia.A
