My name is Dave Boyer and I'm excited to be teaching science. I grew up in a science teacher's house and in a family of four generations of teachers. My interest in science eventually developed while studying Aeronautical Science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and continued into studying environmental science at the University of North Carolina at Asheville where I graduated with a B.A. Environmental Economics. I received my Middle Grades Science teaching certification from UNC-Greensboro.
I've taught 7th grade science for eight years, but I'm thrilled to have a chance now to teach the 6th grade curriculum. All aspects of science interest me, but my biggest passion in science is tropical forests, which has led me down the Amazon on four trips that total almost one full year. My senior project at UNC-Asheville was on sustainable development in the Brazilian Amazon. I evaluated the opportunities and ecosystem of the Rio Camerao-Grande region and the village of Sao Francisco.
When I was a young 6th grader I began to love science. My older brother and I joined the Young Astronauts Club at our middle school and were a part of an exchange program where we hosted a Young Cosmonaut from the Soviet Union (Russia) and then took a two-week trip to Russia to study their space program. Unfortunately, I don't have any plans to organize a trip to Russia for the 6th grade students at Kernersville Middle School; I will do my best to make 6th grade science as memorable as it was for me.
