Welcome to the Adventurers' Team! I am Ms. Thomas and this is my eighth year at Walkertown Middle School and my twelfth year in the Forsyth County school system. I love reading and writing. I hope to foster and encourage that same appreciation of literature and written expression in my students. We will begin this school year by mastering classroom procedures, becoming acquainted with one of the best loved southern literary characters, reinforcing our understanding of and recognition of literary elements, and demonstrating the strategies used by accomplished writers. My desire is that each of my students will leave my classroom with a greater understanding and appreciation of the art of writing and a newfound love of literature.
I will also be teaching Social Studies this year. Some of your students will be assigned to my last period Social Studies class. We will focus on the six pieces of criteria a culture must meet in order to be considered a thriving civilization. We will begin with Early Man, work our way through Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, Africa, and the early Americas. We will also look at the impact different religious beliefs have had and continue to have on various civilizations. Students will be required to maintain an Interactive Student Notebook and to complete several in-class projects. My hope is that my students will come to realize their responsibility to society, understand how we as a culture impact the world, and to better understand how the world impacts our lives.
