The intent of the North Carolina Healthful Living Standard Course of Study is to establish good quality health patterns for all students, kindergarten through twelfth grade, early in life that will set a strong foundation for a lifetime of wellness. The Healthful Living Standard Course of Study is a combination of two content areas, health and physical education. When these two content areas are integrated and well-taught, the wellness of students will be significant. Healthy students who attend school regularly tend to achieve well in school! They are more alert and attentive, and they have the endurance to "feel good" while learning. "Health and success in school are interrelated. Schools cannot achieve their primary mission of education if students and staff are not healthy and fit physically, mentally, and socially" (Fit, Healthy, Ready to Learn, 2000).
