The Visually Impaired program at Sherwood Forest is unique in that it is the only elementary program in the WInston-Salem/ Forsyth County Schools that serves students who are totally blind. Our students are able to fully participate in all school activities, with some adaptations.
We teach students to read braille and to use their other senses to be aware of the world around them. As teachers, we believe that our visually impaired students are capable of doing all that sighted children can do. We want them to feel confident in their abilities, safe as they maneuver throughout the school environment, and knowledgeable about subjects presented in class.
Not only do we support the teaching of core subjects of math, language arts, science, and social studies, but we also teach the Expanded Core Curriculum, exclusive to the visually impaired community. (See menu for Expanded Core Curriculum)
