  • Dr. Nathan Daughtrey visits Wind Ensemble

Posted by Jonathan Miller on 3/7/2013
In early February Dr. Nathan Daughtrey paid a visit to Glenn High School and spent some time visiting the Wind Ensemble. Dr. Daughtrey is an accomplished composer and percussionist who is a professor at High Point University where he teaches composition and percussion. During the visit the band rehearsed Downtown Dash which is on of Dr. Daughtrey's many compositions for band. After rehearsing the band for about an hour he then performed a couple of his pieces on marimba and vibraphone. The students in Wind Ensemble were star struck and many of them got autographs. When he was done performing Dr. Daughtrey answered questions about music and composing. The students asked very insightful questions of Dr. Daughtrey and I was proud to call them my students. It was a great day for music at Glenn High School!

  • Jazz Band celebrates Black History Month

Posted by Jonathan Miller on 3/7/2013
On Thursday February 7th the jazz band celebrated Black History Month by performing music written by Duke Ellington. The band gave two performances, one for the students of Glenn High School, and an evening performance for family and friends. All the pieces in the program were either written by Ellington or made popular by him. The concert included a slide show with pictures and information about Duke Ellington and his music. The concert was very well received by parents, staff and students. Program for the concert was the following...

    Caravan
    It don't Mean a Thing
    Mood Indigo
    Perdido
    Satin Doll
    Take the A-Train

Next year the jazz band will celebrate Black History Month with the music of Herbie Hancock!

  • Ron Amos works with Wind Ensemble

Posted by Jonathan Miller on 12/5/2012
On Tuesday December 4th the Wind Ensemble had a special guest. Mr. Ron Amos, a retired band director and current employee of Winston Salem Forsyth County Schools, visited with band and gave some great insights into the musicality and technique of the group. Mr. Amos also got to sample some of Mr. Miller's wife's cookies. Mr. Amos had kind things to say about both the musicians in the band and the cookies!

  • Mr. Miller's been writing again...

Posted by Jonathan Miller on 12/5/2012
In November I had just completed a new piece for String Quintet entitled "Horizons".  This piece came after an extended break from composing. It has my usual rhythmic challenges and it has hints of the bands 2012 marching band show in it as well. I want to thank the "Strung Out" String Quintet in Mr. Holmberg's 4th period for bringing the music to life. They're doing a great job with it!

Members of the quintet are Ashlyn Nelson, Hayley Lange Violin, McKayla Teague Viola, Katie Wall Cello, Leandro Lara Bass.

I heard the quintet practicing in the hallway a few times and they sounded so good I knew I just had to write a piece for them!
