• Welcome to Mr. Rainey's Website
    What are we doing?
Our class is very structured, so students work from the time they enter until the time they leave the classroom.  Each class begins with a grammar warm-up, which they record in their composition notebooks.  Then we move into a read aloud time.  The read aloud lasts for about 7-8 minutes each day, and it allows students an opportunity to hear stories, informational texts, novels, etc.  My goal for this time is for students to hear many different forms of writing and authors.  Currently, we are reading James Patterson's "Middle School: Get Me Out of Here" (a novel).  After the read aloud, we move into a mini-lesson, which is based on a skill we are learning or will be learning.  The final part of the class is an activity time.  Students complete various tasks during this time related to the standard(s) we are covering.
Independent Reading Assignment (Year-long): Students should be reading nightly. They are required to read at least 3 books a month (depending on page length of the book(s)).  We will begin conferencing next week, in which students will meet with me to discuss the book(s) they are reading.  On September 30, a reading log is due to show what students have been reading during September.  They should record everything they read.   Students will also participate in a peer book talk on September 30, as well.  Details about the book talk will be given to students prior to September 30.
