Backpack Reminder - all students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades will need a clear backpack. Due to limited funding, we are unable to provide these this school year for all students, and ask that families purchase theirs prior to the start of the school year.

Every WS/FCS third grader is getting a card of encouragement from Bank of America employees in the Triad ahead of this year’s EOGs. The distribution of over 4,000 cards began on Thursday morning as employees visited Kimberley Park Elementary School to hand out cards and hype up students for their tests. Employees say it’s important to them that kids in their community know that everyone is rooting for them to succeed, even outside their school.

“We want you to know that we believe in you, so you should believe in yourself,” said Greg Cox, president of Bank of America Triad. “You are capable of doing really great work.”

Players and coaches from Winston-Salem State University’s volleyball and football teams joined Kimberley Park Elementary School for their field day on Friday. The teams played games with the students and visited classrooms to offer advice on how to succeed in sports, academics, and life. Principal Diamond Gwyn says working with WSSU offers her students a reminder of what they can achieve by working hard and making good decisions.

“We want to get our kids thinking about who they want to be after they leave us,” Gwyn said. “We want them to be ready for success after Kimberley Park.”

Every student at Kimberley Park Elementary School and Cook Literacy Model School got a free pair of shoes today thanks to a generous partnership between Rack Room Shoes, Shoes That Fit and the Chris Paul Family Foundation. The organizations made it a special occasion for the students by hiring a DJ and bringing in mascots from Wake Forest University and Winston-Salem State University. They also took care of staff by bringing in food and giving every staff member a $100 gift card.

Principal Diamond Gwyn from Kimberley Park, which received another big donation of shoes from Fleet Feet last week, says that her school's culture is stronger because of community partners like these. Having shoes that fit means having one less obstacle to focusing and succeeding in the classroom, and plenty of students will feel more secure at school because of these donations. It's also just comforting to know that Winston-Salem and Forsyth County are full of people who want to support them.

"The students' excitement is enough to make this a special day, but the fact that we can come together and feel this kind of community support makes it even better," Gwyn said.

The district has introduced a new initiative called R.I.D.E.S. to provide additional support for our bus drivers during routes, field trips, and other transportation needs. As part of this initiative, every family is required to complete an agreement for each student, as buses are used for field trips. These agreements were sent home last week (yellow paper). We want every bus ride to be safe, respectful, and pleasant for students and drivers. WS/FCS R.I.D.E.S. is an educational program and set of expectations for how everyone will behave one the bus. Visit the WSFCS website for more information on this new initiative: https://www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/page/bus-rules-and-behavior-expectations

PLEASE SHARE: Due to dangerous conditions on the roads and safety concerns, WS/FCS will be closed today, Tuesday, December 3, for students and staff. We are sorry for this late-minute decision, as we always hope to give families time to plan. However, given this morning's condition reports, we believe this is the best decision for students and staff. - WSFCS Central Office Team

Due to potential winter weather overnight, WS/FCS will be on a two-hour delay Tuesday morning, December 3. This will give time for the sun to rise so that students and staff can safely get to school and work.
