SEL & Second Step
What is Social Emotional Learning?
Social emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which we all acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for being a healthy adult. SEL at Old Town addresses CASEL's Five Competencies:
Self-Awareness
Self-Management
Social Awareness
Relationship Skills
Responsible Decision-Making
These standards are explicitly addressed during weekly classroom SEL activities and integrated throughout the regular school day.
We use SEL skills when we:
Resolve conflicts or disagreements
Form and strengthen relationships
Recognize and manage emotions
Empathize with others and support them
Collaborate in the workplace
Interact with people with different experiences, backgrounds, and opinions
Second Step Curriculum
OTES uses the Second Step curriculum to teach 4 units (one unit per quarter) to all of our K-5 students: Growth Mindset & Goal-Setting, Emotion Management, Empathy & Kindness, and Problem-Solving. These lessons are taught by classroom teachers every other week. In between Second Step lessons, teachers lead their classes in interactive SEL activities to expand on their skills.
Families can learn more about Second Step and help improve their children's social-emotional skills by following the handouts linked below.
