Each year, thousands of middle schoolers across the state read and study the books and authors on a list provided by the NC School Library Media Association. In March, participating schools compete against each other by answering a series of questions about the selected books.

Even though the Battle of the Books culminates in a district competition, the real intent of BOB is to promote reading, as well as to teach cooperation and team-building.
