The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Board of Education named North Carolina State Board of Education Member Catty Quiroz Moore Interim Superintendent of Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools during Tuesday night’s board meeting. She will start June 2. For more information on Moore, click here.
The board also heard an update on budget savings for this year and next year during their meeting on Tuesday night.
The district has already planned for $23,357,000 in savings for the 2025-26 school year through measures including reduction of 81 central office positions, reduced allotment of 148 school positions, and reduction of staff cell phones, take-home cars, and supplemental program funding. Future recommended non-personnel cost saving measures include eliminating remaining cell phones, out-of-state travel, more supplemental programs, substitutes for some teaching assistants, and under-enrolled Pre-K classrooms.
McManus also presented cost saving options that revolve around eliminating choice school transportation, increasing class sizes by one or two students, requiring employee contributions for dental insurance, and further reductions in staff. The board members didn’t vote on any options on Tuesday.
With regard to the current fiscal year, the district has identified $9.9 million from various sources that could be used to help make up for the $42 million shortfall. The board voted to formally request the remaining $32.1 million from the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners.
Also on the board’s agenda for the evening were:
- Recognitions for the Christopher Pegelow as the winner of this year’s Safe Sober T-Shirt Design Contest, community partners involved in the America 250 program, and WS/FCS Foundation Grant recipients.
- Updates on private pay before/after school providers, EC related, itinerant, and nursing services contracts, and technology subscription renewals.
- Approval of a change order on the new Brunson Elementary School, renewal of the food services management contract, disposition of surplus property, replacement school buses, and several minor policy revisions.
The Board of Education will meet again on Tuesday, June 10 at 6:30 pm.
